Every hero has an origin story.

Some of them follow an arc, others wander the wilderness until all that’s left are the correct answers to all the problems in the world. Our hero had a different method. He was more like Batman. He was clever, curious, intuitive, but mostly determined. And he was never quite sure whether he was a hero or a villain, but he knew laughter could cure just about anything.

He had a family, a wife and a son. His wife reminds us about the deep internal kindness that kept him on the right side of the line, but his son reminds us of the wonder. And we want to make sure that he is in a position to appreciate his father’s legacy as much as you do.

We are going to start a college fund, because that’s what people do. But it comes with a caveat. College isn’t the only way. Once upon a time, our friend tried college too. But it didn’t lastlong. Didn’t make sense. There is a version of truth that’s in books, and a version that roams, free range. We see some of that in his son, who’s red hair sits atop his head like a fire coming from his mind. We want to leave behind some kind of trust, so that the fire can burn as bright as it needs to.

If it burns in books, so be it. But if it burns right out the end of a can, that’s okay too. We know that sometimes kids choose to go into the family business, and if, someday, he wants to spend his money on paint instead, so much the better for all of us. Hopefully he has his father’s gift, because the world needed that gift.
A piece of trivia: Early on, Aware originally went by Reps. We’re not going to make any jokes about the gym—everybody has to start somewhere, and he got big enough to carry any name he wanted. At five years old, his son is already going by “Master Goggles.” Even he understood his father was kind of a superhero. Help him carry that legacy forward. Aware did so much, but that child is the greatest thing he ever did. Or at least that’s what he thought. We’re sure you will agree.

Everybody in the culture has lost a few people they weren’t ready to lose, who cannot be replaced. It’s another piece of the unspoken bond that keeps us all linked, whether we know each other as civilians or not. For us, this is different though.
A founding member of INDECLINE is gone. If you know the streets, you know Aware. Even if you don’t, you’ve seen his work. And if you are a fan of us, you are a fan of him.
To those in the know, he’s a legend. To the Graffiti Task Force, he’s a monster. And they will continue to have nightmares about the open cases he left behind. To the average commuter, he is a crack in the veneer of the lie that only works if we keep buying it. He met them where they least expected it, a pirate sailing behind the plastic vinyl of a hijacked billboard, laughing along with anyone who had a free moment and a sense of humor. He never discriminated: The streets are for the people.
Like any legend, he left behind a body of work that is staggering, both in breadth and content. He did more than paint, he engineered the impossible, and when the same old walls weren’t enough, he invented new genres in graffiti. He inspired anyone who ever felt an itch that can’t be scratched with anything but a fat tip. He didn’t need the galleries to build his rep; they needed him to build their cred.
We’re not going to talk about how hurt we are, it’s obvious the hole he leaves behind. But we want to show our gratitude to anyone who’s ever been on a mission and seen him in action. There is nothing like it, nothing like him.
Giants cast a long shadow. Especially as the sun goes down. But his name will burn longer than the streetlights, because he did his best work in the dark. If you need to visit him, he built his shrines out in the open. Whole cars. Walls. Even entire installations. Make a pilgrimage, but respect the name. This ain’t a game, and he left these gifts for those who don’t play. Even if he’s not around to enforce it, they still remember.
His name was Aware, because he saw the world differently. He always challenged us to do the same. And we pass that on to you.
With eternal reverence for the giant himself,
Rest Easy Brother.
