Yesterday, I reintroduced the MOMMIES Act with @corybooker to expand Medicaid for birthing people and promote more holistic, community-based approaches to maternal care.

This is my paternal grandmother, Grandma Carrie whom I never met. She died giving birth to my father's youngest brother, this was in the 1950's.

Today, in 2021, Black people are still three times more likely to die in childbirth or post birthing complications than white people.

The butterfly pin on the frame is a gift from Nneka Hall to honor her baby girl Anaya. She’s a Boston-based advocate who suffered the trauma of infant loss. She was my SOTU guest in 2020.

Malcolm X. el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz. Truth teller. Justice seeker. Freedom fighter.

Father. Husband. Son of Roxbury.

Today is his 96th birthday.

Before his assassination in 1965, he spent some early, formative years in Boston.

In 2017 when I was on the City Council, I worked with @wutrain and @titojacksonboston to get the city to formally recognize #MalcolmXDay.

Today, I support the Shabazz family’s calls to fully reopen the investigation into his assassination.

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate his life and legacy, pick up The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

My father gave me a copy when I was a kid.

I arrived in Boston from Chicago in the Fall of 1992, not knowing a soul. I immersed myself in the school community & leadership & didn't limit my education to the walls of the University.

The Congressional internship that I landed while a BU student changed my life. 25+ years later, I now hold that seat in Congress.

Unfortunately, as is so often the case, life got in the way of school. Several disruptive events forced me to withdraw to support my family, but I never stopped learning or being in service. My 30 year path to this honorary degree has been an unconventional one, but I’m grateful for the journey.

I dedicate this degree to the ancestors — I am their wildest dreams ❤️

To my parents, my roots & my wings, & to my husband & our daughter who sacrifice & serve alongside me daily. #lookatgod #wediditmommy

Spent this weekend in Chinatown with local business owners learning more about the impact the pandemic and rise in anti-asian hate has had on their families and businesses.

Despite the devastation, restaurant owners continue to labor in love to preserve the culture and soul of the MA 7th.

Whenever I'm in the neighborhood, I have to visit Eldo Cake. I love their traditional pastries — the sponge cake is everything!
