Taking the road less travelled.. has always been my preferred way of travel and that same wanderlust led me to the sands of Saudi Arabia in 2008.
Back then there was no other way to enter the country to explore it than coming for work. 14 years ago I made the decision to move to Riyadh to work as a nurse, which gave me the opportunity to begin exploring the Magic Kingdom as a resident.
One of the first places I traveled to as a tourist was AlUla, which completely blew me away as an untouched, off the beaten path destination.
The feeling of being inside an Indiana Jones movie is still there as the destination opens to the world.
Fast forward to 2021 in London, where the world celebrates the reopening of travel again at @wtmlondon, @wanderlustmag Travel Awards, I’m honored for being chosen the Travel Media Influencer of the Year.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s past, present and future in one frame.. While watching the @saudihawks exhilarating National Day air show on the side of a road in North of Riyadh, we spotted this traditional Bedouin tent in the middle of a construction zone, it was being used by the workers as a break area.

So the brilliant idea came about to capture the skyscrapers of the city in the horizon, the aircrafts performance in the sky and the traditional tent all in one.. just as the sun started to shift into golden hour.

Thanks to my fellow photographer friends @aqaisaran and @afnan_kayat for making this vision come to light!

We arrived at Maraya for sunset and couldn’t believe our eyes when this beautiful black Arabian stallion stood gracefully in front of the colossal mirror-clad building, creating an instant striking contrast with the surrounding pastel hues of Ashar valley.

What made the scene even more outstanding , the horse was ridden by what seemed like a Saudi King or Knight from the old films.. a large Saudi flag glimmered emerald green as the knight rode past us in the last rays of sunlight, magnified by Maraya’s reflectors.

It felt like stepping into an epic film set.

The “knight” was Aziz who introduced us to his stunning black beauty Lel, which means Night in Arabic. I was definitely not dressed for riding horses but couldn’t let the opportunity pass and asked if I could ride Lel. Thanks to Aziz for allowing me to ride and Aaqib for the great photos.

Sometimes the best shots come totally unexpected!

Seeing family after 3 years away from Finland has been such a blessing.
It’s also difficult to leave all that greenery, fresh air, being able to breathe and spend all day outdoors and make the transition back to the heat of Saudi. In the meanwhile I think of the summer and all the special memories created. They will take us a long way, especially the memories of this very special day, when Elsa brought us all under one roof ????????????
