Tickets are booked for our next trip to Africa. A few years ago we stopped by Lalibela to see the amazing 'rock-hewn' churches. The Church of Saint George was carved (hewn) out of solid rock in the 12th/13th century. It was carved downwards, into the earth, which is composed of a volcanic tuff.

The interior of the structure had been hollowed out and contains a shrine to St. George. Behind a curtain, forbidden from anyone to see except the priests, is a replica of the Ark of the Covenant.

In total, there are eleven rock-hewn churches in Lalibela. Saint George's is one of the most well known.
