Reflecting on Memorial Day and the service of our nation’s bravest citizens. When I was a young girl, my grandmother used to cut flowers from her garden (often peonies, one of her favorite flowers) to lay at the graves of those who had served our country. She would always bring me with her to emphasize the importance of honoring the lives that were sacrificed to secure our freedom - there is no greater act of courage. I remember that time with reverence and deep gratitude and I am so thankful my grandmother instilled this important lesson in me. I will be observing this holiday by going to my small town’s parade. Veterans will be marching and we will be honored to support them. Wishing you all some time to reflect this holiday weekend. Enjoy the company of those you hold dear! #memorialday #honorthebrave #familytime #peonymemories

As a designer, my inspirations from Italy draw from both the old and new world. I marvel at its classical architecture, incredible art, stirring opera, rich literature and extraordinary history. Simultaneously, I very much admire current-day Italy as a world leader in modern design and a producer of fine foods and wines. Above all, I love that Italians cherish the notion of family and friendship and reserve the time to enjoy both.

Many years ago, I attended an enchanted dinner in Tuscany. The host, a debonair Italian nobleman, served wine he had produced on his estate. After dinner, he performed a magical candle-lit piano recital which was absolutely spellbinding. This experience inspired me, as I had always dreamed of a partnership involving wine. I also started piano lessons immediately after but found producing “presentable” music was as challenging as finding a suitable vineyard for my dream project!

Then, a few years ago, I shared this story with dear friends, Roberta and Armando Fumanelli of Verona and they sweetly asked if I would collaborate on a special bottling of their Marchesi Fumanelli Amarone Riserva ‘Carolyne Roehm’ 2010. The Fumanelli’s have produced fine wine on their estate since 1470, so this was indeed a special honor. Armando asked me to paint a label for his best Amarone. I chose a tulip for its visual intricacies. In the language of flowers tulips symbolize elegance and grace and red denotes true love.

This limited edition Amarone is for special celebrations. Presented in its own wooden box, it also makes an exceptional gift. Please see the link in my bio for more information on how to experience this incredible wine.

After surviving a year of Covid and lock-downs, we should indulge ourselves and our guests and clink our glasses to brighter days ahead!

Cheers!!

I cannot let May pass me by without paying tribute to one of my absolute favorite flowers, lily-of-the-valley (my birth month flower)! This table, set in my morning room, combines two of my loves - lily-of-the-valley and Wedgewood’s Jasperware in black and white. Back when I began collecting these pieces of pottery, I knew that lily-of-the-valley would be the perfect flower for this vase. The scale of the blossom and the scale of the white relief of scenery on the black pottery were a perfect match in my mind - neither overpowers, rather both are enhanced in this elegant and fitting combination! I adore lily-of-the-valley so much, I made it the subject of one of my paintings. Fast forward and this painting became the inspiration for pieces from a line of products that I am collaborating on with Tina @theenchantedhome. This green and white lily-of-the-valley plate (which will also be available in blue and white) is an introduction to that line, which will be available on both our websites soon! Stay tuned! #lilyofthevalley #jasperware #theenchantedhome #dreamcollaboration

Tulips and Lilacs are in their full glory here at Weatherstone and I'm officially in heaven! The elegant symmetry and wide variety of hues in tulips always captivates me and has me marveling at their beautiful intricacies. And the aroma of my lilacs - well, need I say more? I gathered armfuls of both in various shades of purple during my rounds in the garden yesterday to add some springtime exuberance and fragrance to my living room. My spirits are immediately lifted every time I walk in there! I've been recently reading up on all plants for my new gardening project and these flowers, while different, have some commonalities! They are both edible. Both have caught the eye of presidents or first ladies - Laura Bush was a lover of monochromatic bouquets of tulips and Thomas Jefferson planted lilacs in his garden (and wrote about them in gardening notes). Both are from families that include food - Lilac is from the same as the olive tree (Oleaceae) and Tulips are related to onions, garlic and asparagus (Liliaceae). So get outside (or in your kitchen, apparently!) and enjoy these flowers while they are still at the height of their beauty! #springtimejoy #tuliptime #stopandsmellthelilacs

I adore these painterly red, yellow and green parrot tulips - they truly make my garden sing this time of year! Their vibrant, bold streaks awaken my creativity and inspire me to get out my paints and canvases. One single tulip teaches me more about the sophisticated blending of hues and color combinations than any art class could - Mother Nature is truly a master and always gets it right! These multicolored tulips, paired with the brilliant yellows of the daffodils (which are still blooming here) and the crisp blue and white porcelain (my favorite go-to tulipiere for dramatic height is compliments of @theenchantedhome!) make for the perfect table for any spring celebration. These colors instantly rid me of my pandemic blahs. They are fresh, bursting with seasonal jubilation and set the scene for an unforgettable gathering. #colorexplosion #moodlifter #gatherinjoy #flowerinspiration

There are officially too many cooks in this kitchen and this sassy lady thinks she’s the chef de cuisine. Unfortunately she’s tall, so she is able to get into all sorts of places where she doesn’t belong! Simon is blind to these antics as she’s completely stolen his heart (along with our food and our counter space). He calls her Hussy girl, but I affectionately refer to her as Wacko?. Her puppy energy keeps our quarantine days lively but I draw the line at paws on my marble countertops. Unless she perfects a soufflé, she’s fired from her kitchen post! #naughtypuppy #badgirl #bestgirl #downdog

Happy May Day to everyone (get out your maypoles and dance a little!). Here is a small painting I did of my very favorite flower, which is also the official flower of my birth month (and adored by my dear grandmother as well - standing and inhaling their fragrance in her gardens is one of my most cherished childhood olfactory memories!) There is also a custom of gifting bouquets of lillies-of-the-valley on May 1st in France. King Charles IX received a sprig of lily-of-the-valley as a token of good luck on May 1, 1561, and because he was a superstitious man, he decided to bestow them on all of the ladies of his court. This started the tradition of La Fete du Muguet, which is now known as May Day! There are many observances and traditions celebrated around the world on this day. What are yours? #mayday #birthdaymonth #warmerdaysahead
