I feel like I don’t really talk about my life or the ins and outs of my job as a photographer much on here. But If you haven’t noticed, for the last few years now, 7-14 day road trips have pretty much become a monthly occurrence for me. Exploring the United States and Canada in my 4Runner and various battered rental cars, I’ve spent thousands of dollars and personally driven more than 100,000 miles exploring in search of just some of the photos you see on my page. I’ve shot a LOT of photos too; hundreds of thousands. Despite that, I’d estimate over 95% of the photos I have actually shot in this time are not even worth showing people. Those magical photo moments you imagine sadly happen extremely briefly, and very few and far between. It’s hard for the average person to understand the hours of preparation, work and dedication that go into capturing the images you see online or in ads, not just by me but by all the travel photographers. It’s not exactly always a super glamorous lifestyle while working either— you’re often sleep deprived, dirty and haven’t showered in days/weeks, feeling hungry and malnourished, and while on the road you have to find places to sleep at night where you won’t get kicked out or hassled unless you wanna drop a months rent on hotels. There’s also so many hidden issues and things that can (and inevitably will) happen to put a damper on your trip and plans. It takes a savy and well-prepared traveler to not let the occasional catastrophe bring you down completely. But honestly, that’s all part of the thrill of it for me and makes it that much more rewarding when you walk away with images that you’re excited about and stories worth retelling.
