This is Petra

Known as Wadi Musa in Arabic but also known as Petra, these rock carvings date back to the fourth century B.C.

Ruins of the once-great metropolis and trading center. In 106 AD the Romans conquered this area, and named it Arabia Petraea.

There are similar carvings in Saudi Arabia called Al Ula. They were created during the same time period.

It is a definite must-see when stopping in Jordan. I highly recommend paying a local Bedouin guide to take you to the view point (ask my friend @ahmadhamaden to take you to this spot!)

Happy Holidays from the Dead Sea ????

Being at the lowest point on earth (427 meters below sea level) is pretty awesome. Floating in it is even better!

Honestly there is no where I’d rather be during this time of the year than traveling. I don’t celebrate Christmas so it makes it a bit more fun to travel during this time.

Do you like to travel at this time of the year, or do you stay home with family?

Would you believe this is in Iraq?

These are the marshes of Al-Chibayish, right outside of Basrah. It is really incredible to see this ecosystem filled with birds, water buffalo, and more.

Despite this, the marshes are suffering. Not only did Saddam Hussein drain these famed marshes to punish the rebellious tribesmen who lived in them, but they were already sinking to extremely low levels.

The people living in this religion live in big families and survive on the marsh. Now, the industry has mainly moved to domestic tourism, with many families taking locals from Baghdad on their boats on the weekend.

Is there anywhere else you’ve noticed negative impacts to the ecosystem?

This is the previous palace of Saddam Hussein ????

As you can see it has been defaced, but it is really a beautiful building.

Saddam Hussein is known for being a dictator. He ruled Iraq from 1979 until his overthrow in 2003. To ensure his control, Saddam ordered the execution of dozens of top ranking soldiers.

Although it is difficult to see the remnants of such a horrible person I think it is also important to see this and remember so that it won’t happen again.

What do you think, do you think this should be left for people to see, or torn down?

Ziggurat of Ur, capital of the ancient Mesopotamian civilization ????

Known as “Etemenniguru” when translated from the Sumerian language, it means the “temple whose foundation created an aura”.

Originally built in 2000 BCE, it crumbled by 600 BCE and was restored by King Nabondius during this time.

In this complex you can find this main pyramid temple structure which was the capital of Mesopotamia. There is also a shrine of the moon god “Nanna” next to it. There is still old Sumerian writing that can be found here!!

Have you ever heard of the ancient Sumerian civilization?
