⚠️???‍♀️We’re at War ??‍♀️??

We’re always fighting a battle against our mind.

Since the day you were born, you’ve been having a conversation with yourself.

We all have internal dialogue.

What we really don’t think about is how we talk to ourself.

Our minds are powerful.

The things we tell ourself are what we manifest in life. You dictate your actions. Only you control what you do—what you are capable of.

You are not always in control of the outcome, but you are in control of your response. You are the one who gives up or decides to get up and keep pushing forward. Where your mind goes, your body will follow.

Take control of your thoughts.
Take them captive.
Focus on your internal dialogue and change the way you speak to yourself.
If you’re like me, you need constant reframing to see the joy in every circumstance and to see your own potential.

??♥️? Adoption News ?♥️??

That’s right! #adoptionupdate

It hasn’t been long since my last adoption post. And that’s awesome ? if you recall, we asked for prayer alongside us while we fasted and prayed together. We have been waiting to hear back from the Colombian government. Well, on July 16, we got the news that we are officially registered (approved!!) as eligible adoptive parents in Colombia ?? This is a huge milestone for our family. Now, we wait for a call! Again, the timeline is widely variable—days, weeks, months. Regardless, we are ready for our beloved child!

God is good.

???I’ll say it until I die— eat more plants???
#fableticspartner

Your mom told you to eat your vegetables. She was right.

Everyone is always looking for some magic pill to health. We live in a world where we are bombarded with processed foods and not-so-great health choices. We’ve adapted to what’s easy, indulgent, and effortless.

6 in 10 adults in the US have a chronic disease, and 4 in 10 have two or more. Heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. They are also leading drivers of the nation’s $3.8 trillion in annual health care costs. Fewer than 1 in 10 US adults and kids eat enough fruits & vegetables. US diets are high in added sugars, sodium, and saturated fats which directly contribute to our health crisis. A healthy diet helps kids grow and develop properly and reduces their risk of developing chronic diseases, including obesity as adults. As a mom, how can I not want to cultivate healthy nutrition habits for June!?

In order for our society, our health, and our culture to change, we have to be more diligent about changing our own nutrition habits.
Instead of seeing food as calories, we need to see them as nutrients.
Instead of comfort, we need to use food as medicine.
Instead of giving into marketing, we need to educate ourselves on what is actually healthy.

Nutrition isn’t complicated.
Eat whole, real food.
And eat more vegetables.
Your life depends on it.

???C-???

… that was my grade I received in Physics II.
For anyone trying to get into medical school, you know that is one of the core prerequisite courses.

I struggled through physics I. I basically spent countless hours trying to understand it. My other classes came easy, but not physics. It was one of the first times in life I worried about even passing a class.

When I made a B, I was relieved. Stressed, but at least I passed. Med school wasn’t out of the picture entirely.

Then physics II happened.

Same story.

Except this time I sort of passed? C-. Holy crap. That’s not good.

I applied to med school. I interviewed at a handful of places and was waitlisted. I ultimately did not get accepted.

Obviously my story doesn’t end there. I reapplied two years later, with the same application, and got in.

I’m writing this 11 years later living the life I envisioned. That “failure”—the blemish on my path didn’t stop me. I graduated at the top of my med school class. I was accepted to residency where I wanted. I served as chief resident. And now, I matched into the most difficult medicine subspecialty. This is not to boast, but to let you know that your failure does not define you. You are not the sum of your mistakes. If you have a goal, keep going. There will be bumps in the road, but find ways to get past them. No one’s journey is easy, so it’s those who want it most that get to the end.

I'm sure the instagram crowd looking in wonder how I manage to keep it together--working a demanding job, being a mom, running a small business, focusing on health, maintaining a happy marriage. You know what? I don't always, at least not well.

At the big transition points in my life, I find myself reflecting on the past and stressing about the future. Notice the present is not included? With change come anxiety, fear, stress. At least for me that's how it usually goes. I tend to fill up my life with a million different tasks. Part of this is trying to be prepared for what life may have in store. Another part is trying to always be achieving the next great thing. I put pressure on myself. While being task/goal oriented is great, it often comes with a price. Not only do I create more anxiety for myself, but I miss out on the present.

I found myself complaining to Joey the other day that I wasted time that we could have been doing something productive on our to-do list. His response?

??‍♀️???? Adoption update… and request ????❤️

This summer brought a harsh reality to our adoption process as I quickly crammed three weeks of vacation into May and June. Those weeks were saved to bring our child home from Colombia this year. Well, that clearly did not happen. Over two years have passed since we started our #adoptionjourney . We remain a family of three and we are quickly approaching June’s fifth birthday. When you look at her when we started compared to now, you can really understand the time that has passed.

So what’s happening?

Some clarification was requested by the Colombian government regarding some of our paperwork. I think that’s the last update I gave. We thought that the hard road was over once we submitted everything to Colombia. Well, we assumed wrong. The process can take several more months while they review everything. And then, if approved, we wait for a match.

Now, as a new year started on July 1, I save my vacation time again hoping to use it to go to Colombia.

If you’ve made it this far in my post, I have a request of you. Tomorrow, @joey2thej and I will be fasting and praying. If it’s on your heart, pray with us tomorrow for our child—that they would come home soon. Pray for the children who don’t have families. Pray for all the waiting families. God holds the whole world in his hands. His timing is perfect.

??‍??Love makes the world go round ✌?❤️?

Distance makes the heart grow fonder… cliché? Maybe. But it’s 100% true this week. I love my little girl to pieces and being away from her on call is so hard! If I didn’t have my awesome husband and sweet little girl at home, being at work all the time wouldn’t be so challenging.

Thanks to the holiday today, I had the day to spend with my family. My heart is so full.

I walked into the waiting room of the icu to speak with a patient’s spouse yesterday to get consent. I was quickly surrounded by a room of people. I was caught off guard. It was my last day on call. The end of the day. One more case to do. But in that moment, it was a spouse, a parent, a friend that many people loved.

Life is about love.
It’s about loving people.
It’s about caring for each other in our darkest moments.

Don’t take today for granted.

The best moments of my week were spent in lounge clothes snuggling my little girl. Happiness is right where you are.

????Peace, Clarity, Calmness✌???‍♀️??‍♀️ #fableticspartner

My schedule has been insanely busy this past month. Often when things get hectic and I start to feel drained, Joey tells me I should sleep in and not work out in the morning. #YeahRight ?

There’s a lot more to getting up and exercising every morning than me being obsessive ?

I had a conversation with a female attending while we were both on call together. She started running daily in med school and has continued to exercise most days before work. We both agreed that there is more benefit from regular activity than just the physical. As busy working moms, the peace, clarity, and calmness that exercise brings mentally is huge. There’s a lot to be anxious about in life, and setting the foundation each day before things get chaotic is a paramount to my mental well-being.

If I could tell the younger me one piece of advice, it would be to get up and move consistently. Especially for medical students, trainees, residents, this is HUGE. This is taking care of yourself and preventing burn out. July 1 is a few days away. Start now. Start small. Walk. Breathe fresh air. Process your thoughts and emotions. ✌?
