My 12 year old, Nik, got his first dose yesterday!

I believe in this vaccine. I do. But as a mom, I get it. I know intellectually that the chance of an adverse reaction is so small. I know intellectually that my son is literally my height and almost my weight. I know intellectually that it's well studied and carefully rolled out.

But, I would be lying if I didn't admit that I was a bit apprehensive at first. And that's an emotional response. And, it's OK. It's why you will never ever see me shame another parent for any decision they make. But, I knew that I must push past that fear. That I have to trust in the science and the researchers and the data. I trust in those who have dedicated their lives to developing this vaccine.

My son loves science. So we had an open discussion about it - risks and benefits (helping Hawaii create herd immunity and that we can get him fully vaccinated before our family RV vacation to the Grand Canyon next month). We discussed the science behind the vaccine. He thought using nanotechnology would have been cooler than mRNA for the vaccine!

We made an appointment and waited in line with over 100 people. He was nervous because he hates shots. But, after he got it, he said the anticipation was worse than the actual shot.

His littler brother and sister are super jealous because he will be able to hang out with his fully vaccinated friends without a mask soon.

And something about yesterday felt bigger than when I got the vaccine in December. It felt like the beginning of the return to normalcy with the new CDC guidelines about masking and full vaccinations.

This is a personal choice for every parent. But I hope my honesty about my initial fears and our decision making process may help someone. #doctormom #mamasinmedicine #mamaof3

What did I learn about myself as a business owner this past year? I was asked this question in an interview (hence my business casual outfit).

This past year,I learned that:

It’s alright to be scared.
The absolutely unexpected can happen and we can survive.
People in your daily life (work and home) are the most important relationships to cultivate.
I am more resilient than I knew.
I’m a different business owner than I was 12 months ago.

We don’t often think ourselves as business owners in medicine. We consider ourselves as doctors/dentists/etc first, who just happen to have our own private practice. But this year forced many of us to really stop and think like those in business.

Medicine is supposed to be one of those steady professions that you never have to worry about, especially if you own your practice. Once you build the patient base, you should be set. My practice is well established (over 12 years old), we were coasting in early 2020. ‘Everyone needs health care” I was reassured. We never could have anticipated the pandemic and its effect on us. I felt unmoored and untethered as I’m sure many of you did.

It’s been exactly one year since we reopened our clinic and I know we are lucky. Lucky that we were able to weather the closure when so many small businesses closed their doors. Lucky that everyone we love has remained safe and healthy. Lucky that we live in Hawaii where the virus has been under good control.

How did we do it?
We literally just put one step in front of another. We handled each obstacle as it arose. It was too overwhelming in the beginning to try and create a long term plan since the future was so uncertain. So, we remained nimble.

We needed PPE? We found a friend who had a connection. We needed plexiglass at a reasonable cost? Hubby bought it from City Mill and cut and installed it himself. We needed to convert people to telemedicine? I made an e-blast with a landing page with log instructions to our doxy account and a printable vision chart.

One step in front of another. Sometimes that’s all you can do. And, most of the time, it’s enough. What have you all learned about yourself in the past year? Medical or otherwise?

Happy Mother's Day to my mama and to all of the mamas out there. This was the last time I saw my mom in person - Feb 2020. I just got off the phone with her, but FaceTime phone calls can't replace week long visits.

My mother is a physician (a child and adolescent psychiatrist). She was an immigrant female doctor in the 1970's in North Carolina. She struggled with racism and sexism on a daily basis AND took amazing care of her patients and us.

My mom showed me it was possible to be a doctor and a mom, during a time in which topics like work-life balance were not discussed in medicine. I remember her picking us up from school on her shorter work days, making samosas to come in and talk about Diwali and even coming in for career day to share about being a doctor (in a class of stay at home moms, she was the exception and I was SO proud).

She was not a perfect mom, but she gave it her all every single day and taught me that was the most important part in being a mother. I may not always be the mom I envision or endeavor to be, but on this day, surrounded by my babies, I think I am just what they need.

$35K!! I am continuously astonished by what social media can accomplish. Over the past 3 weeks, I have been organizing and hosting a virtual charity event for Big Brothers Big Sisters. I have served on the Board of Directors for over 5 years and this is the third year I’ve organized this event.

Big Brothers Big Sisters, like many non-profits, has faced numerous challenges financially due to the pandemic. I know many are suffering right now, but the personal growth and development of children is very close to my heart, as a pediatric sub specialist and a mom of 3 kids.

In collaboration with the local Dior boutique and female physicians, most of whom I only know through social media, we have collectively raised $35,000 for Big Brothers.

So much is possible with these platforms. Empowerment, inspiration, education and real action.

What I have found here in this community is something I never expected. I have loved connecting with each woman who was interested in supporting my cause. They are my virtual friends and the true essence of #womensupportingwomen

My virtual charity event ends tomorrow - if you’re interested in participating, send me a DM or check out my stories to donate directly to @bbbshawaii #giveback #hawaiilife #bigbrothersbigsisters

Yesterday was hubby’s birthday! It’s the 16th birthday we've shared together. When we met 17 years ago in NYC, I had no idea what was in store for us.

We had never envisioned building a practice together. Never thought we would live in Hawaii, nor that we would have 3 kids (we had always talked about 2).

It takes a special person to put up with my need to over share, my million and one ideas and my never slow down personality.

It may seem like I bulldoze over his desires, but he has quiet strength that is the backbone of our marriage. He never feels threatened by what I accomplish, despite us being in the same field.

He is a remarkable father and supportive partner in both marriage and work. He avoids the spotlight at any cost. And, his constant mantra has always been
