Dude… I’m in LA… I’m making a movie that @netflix is supporting… I’m premiering at one of the most significant Latine film institutions in @laliff_ … Im a filmmaker who’s Afro-Latino that had an idea that is seen, championed , funded and supported… to grow up confused, angry, judged for how I looked and who I was and now I am telling that story on screen. Man… I remember 15-year old Eli buzzing off his curls, never wearing shorts, ashamed of his Puerto Rican curves, feeling so alone and like I was never Latino enough… that I wasn’t artsy enough or talented enough and man here I am. Ya’ll… if you are a filmmaker or anyone and you don’t feel seen, you feel alone or misunderstood - just know the world hasn’t caught up to your greatness yet and don’t let that stop you from doing what you were meant to do. I always use to think, crushing it at life meant having nothing negative happening to you. Feeling nothing negative. Just happy. Well, if there is one pic that sums up my head and heart right now is this one. I’m tired, but excited. Cautious, yet hopeful. Stressed, yet joyful. Bags under my eyes but still looking up. And with all that said - Im crushing at life and I’m happy. Just know that you can be winning, you can be happy, you can enjoy life and still have bags under your eyes. You can be truly living but still carry anxiety and fear. To stumble but to move forward. To realize a stumble is the process in order to move forward is living life with grace. Focus so much on the pressure of success after success. Seeing failure as a symptom of our own self-worth. The judgement of ourselves not doing what we should be. Thinking we are less than and never will be more. Thinking we are going to die tomorrow so we have to be where need to be now! Creating an overall poor world view of regret of the past and stress of the future. Totally diminishing the present. I will tell you this. I screwed up. A lot. And I felt all the above while not realizing that even the mess ups. The poor decisions. The failures. Were not speed bumps but an actual part of the journey. And because of those mistakes I am better and a more well rounded human being. I would not be prepared for the opportunities i have now in my life if it wasn’t for the failures. But the thing is, to know you have time. Go be a human. Deal with failure with grace. And know there are no losses just all human experiences. If you know me, you know how in love I am with museums. The history, knowledge, experiences through objects. I can spend hours in one just observing and touching and feeling the energy of the history around me. Europe is just that. A living, breathing, interactive museum. As I walk through the streets at night. Drink my coffee observing the old buildings and churches in the morning - I feel all of it. To touch a wall, to sit on a bench, to stare out on a hill. So many memories, so many lovers, so much heart break. I feel inspiration in all of it. As an artists and as a human. Inspired to feel all there is of life. Good and bad - and know that no matter what I go through, generations of others have also gone through it. If you are reading this, everything you are going through, so many others have gone through it and made it with way less than you have now. You will be fine.
