Two of the dearest places to my heart in downtown Jeddah:

The first is a small shop on Gabel Street that sells all kinds and shapes of turbans. The second picture dates back to 2013; my all time dear friend and I selecting gifts for my colleagues & professors in America, where I was studying then. The majority wore them as scarves or hung them as wall decoration. The shop salesman, his hospitality, and pink mirror, as you can see, have not changed. Such is this part of Jeddah.

The second is a candy shop few shops down on the same street. During Ramadan, the candy kiosks line up in Souk Al Alawi and Gabel Street, coloring our eyes with their fluorescent shades, all in preparation for Eid. They remind me of my childhood, and old female relatives welcoming us with bags full of chewy strawberry, orange, and pineapple flavored candies, on the first days of Eid.

مكانين من أعز الأماكن على قلبي فيكي يا جدّة:

‎الأول محل صغير في شارع قابل يبيع جميع أنواع وأشكال العمم. الصورة الثانية تعود إلى عام ٢٠١٣ وأنا في نفس المحل مع صديق العائلة المقرّب، نختار هدايا لزملائي وأساتذتي في أمريكا خلال سنين دراستي فيها. الغالبية منهم كانوا يلبسوها إيشاربات أو يعلّقوها زينة. بائع المحل وترحيبه ومرايته الزهرية، كما ترون، ما اتغيروا. هكذا هي جدّة التاريخية.

أما المحل الثاني فهو محل حلاوة العيد في نفس الشارع.. خلال فترة رمضان، البسطات تمتد في سوق العلوي وشارع قابل وعيوننا تتلوّن بألوان الحلويات وأشكالها، تحضيرًا لدخول العيد. هذه الحلويات تفكّرني بزمن أول والجدات والعمّات والخالات اللي كانوا يستقبلونا في مداخل بيوتهم واحنا صغار بأكياس مليانا حلويات مطاطية بطعم الفراولة والبرتقال والأناناس وغيرها.
