Hung Liu grew up in China during the Maoist regime. Much of her work pulls from that experience. She finds her subjects in old photographs and paints them, then covers her canvas in linseed oil. The oil smudges the figures, much like memory distorts reality.

Liu’s current work includes American subjects as well, particularly children of the Dust Bowl era.

Hung Liu (b. 1948), “Pullman” (detail), 2004, oil on canvas. Museum purchase. 2009.3

Artist Judith Schaechter creates her vivid stained glass pieces through a complex process. She engraves, sandblasts, paints and fires her glass to create narrative scenes.

In European Gothic cathedrals, the light from stained glass windows was associated with divinity. Schaechter embraces this historic tradition. She often places her heroines in situations that are reminiscent of Biblical tales.

The bird in the corner of this piece might remind you of a character from a Disney cartoon. But the overall imagery recalls a scene straight out of the Renaissance (Mary visited by the Archangel Michael and the Holy Spirit). In our contemporary context, we can also interpret the deluge of flowers as life's ceaseless concerns.

What other interpretations can you think of?
