Projects like these, where it’s the smallest of tweaks that significantly change a space, are probably my favorite! In this case we took a client’s bedroom and brought in new nightstands, a rug, accessories, lightened the walls with a fresh coat of paint and dressed the bed with luxurious layered linens - voilá!!! Welp! We are coming up on one year of living and loving this sweet cottage! In many, many ways, she was just what our family needed - a step back from the large house that spreads everyone out, a project for me (finally after pouring myself into so many others), living smaller as our girls transition to their own adult lives, a community that feels more like our Midwestern roots, a ‘mature’ neighborhood with old timers who love to stop and chat with me while I am out in the yard and just a peace that comes with living simpler with what we value. It’s been a really, really good year. I wholeheartedly endorse defining for you and your spouse what empty nest life will look like - for us, it is this.

We will have lived in this sweet cottage ONE year next month! Can’t believe a year has flown by! I was just telling someone how I have never felt so at home, so quickly in a home - ever! I don’t know what, specifically, I attribute that too?? For lots of families, staying in the ‘family home’ when the kids leave for college is important. But for us, it has been really, really fun to define this next chapter and how we are gonna live it - including where we live it! This kitchen was initially my biggest worry - it’s small! But because I really do love to cook, it’s efficiency and style (and Wolf range) has made it one of my favorites in our home. It’s cozy and still the place where everyone seems to gather! So what I have learned during the last year is this - take the leap on a home that could use a little love, putting your own stamp is fun! Living in a smaller space doesn’t mean sacrificing style - we elevated our cottage with better lighting and wallpaper and upgraded plumbing fixtures! Anyone who knows me knows how endlessly proud I am to be a mom! It has been my life’s greatest honor and blessing to ‘mother’ these two, now young women. Emma Sandra and Abigail Vivian, you make me so proud and ridiculously happy to watch life unfold for each of you! There are so many details to weight and manage when designing a kitchen. And truly, a fantastic kitchen is in the details - the mix of lighting, cabinet styles, hardware, tile, counters, paint colors or stain finishes, oh my! I can truly see the finished project in my head as I design, but usually the real thing is even better! This kitchen includes lots of fun details - a mix of hardware sizes and styles, 3 different light fixtures, 2 different tiles, mesh cabinet faces of some upper cabinets and a risky dark paint color! I have two kitchens in progress and one I am designing - it’s always so fun to capture the clients personalities, unique details can reflect client preferences. Hello...is this thing on? You would think with my lack of posting, I don’t have much going on but dang, it’s a new ‘normal’ in my design world and I am just trying to survive. I think you have likely heard of the challenges in the home decorating/renovating industry with lead times, lumber price escalations and trying to find a good contractor that isn’t booked through next year. It’s a lot and if I am being honest, it’s not super fun ?. I appreciate the patience of my clients - we are just doing our very best under really wacky circumstances!

I will never get tired of a classic white kitchen! I have a couple in progress right now! For me, white done right offers a mix of warmer and cooler ‘white’ tones in the space. While this kitchen was completed a couple years ago, it remains a favorite!
I am back from vacation today - a much needed creative break, valuable time with my family, a change of scenery and overall feeling we are turning a corner with some clouds being lifted - maybe it’s just all the sunshine expected in Portland this week? Whatever it is, I’ll take it!
