Repost @wild.ark:

A leopard is a cat that is the most adaptable and wide spread out of all large cats on earth. They occupy habitats from the rainforests in central Africa to the deserts of the Middle East. However, even though they are highly adaptable and overly elusive creatures, their numbers are still in steep decline.

They are persecuted for many reasons including human-wildlife conflict, the impact on prey sources due to bush meat trade and for their skins and bones.

The leopard is one of the most sought after animals to see in Africa and they are recognised globally for their beauty.

A lion’s tail is a good sign of how it is feeling. By flicking its tail, a lion can warn others to stay away if it is in a bad mood.

Sometimes we need to remember to communicate how we are feeling. Other people don’t always know what we are thinking or going through. We don’t have lion tails to warn them so we may lash out unexpectedly. Communicating your situation or emotional state can help avoid accidentally hurting others.

Today is the international day for biodiversity and @unbiodiversity is celebrating it with the slogan “We are the solution #fornature”. We agree strongly with the statement and know that biodiversity is closely related to many sustainability solutions. At KRF we emphasize the important role that the health of wildlife plays in our own health. So today, we join the international celebration, knowing that we are the solution to future zoonotic pandemics. We just need to #choosehope and learn from our past mistakes of how we treat our wildlife.

PHOTO OF RESEARCH IN PROGRESS: Many hands make light work. At the Kevin Richardson Foundation, as stipulated in our mandate, we strive to support like-minded organizations as far as we can to bring about lasting change. This year marks our fourth year supporting Namibian Lion Trust, an NPO based in Namibia that works at protecting wild lions, and our third year supporting the University of Pretoria’s Wildlife Management Centre under the guidance of Prof. Adrian Tordiffe of the Carnivore Working Group.

KRF is fortunate enough to be in a position where we can continue collaborating with our “friends of the Foundation” and we look forward to the fruits that these partnerships are still to bear!

Visit our website to make a donation or sign up to our newsletter at the link in bio to help us further our support of other like-minded organizations and projects.

We’re excited to share the results of the global vote to create a New Big 5 of Wildlife Photography. Over the last year, the New Big 5 website received more than 50,000 votes from wildlife lovers around the world for their favourite animals to photograph and see in photos.  The 5 animals in the New Big 5 are:

Elephant · Tiger · Polar Bear · Lion · Gorilla

The ‘Big 5’ is an old term used by trophy hunters in Africa for the most prized and dangerous animals to shoot and kill.  The New Big 5 project had a better idea: to create a New Big 5 of Wildlife Photography, rather than hunting. Shooting with a camera, not a gun.

More than 250 of the world’s wildlife photographers, conservationists and wildlife charities have come together to support this international initiative, which is raising awareness about the crisis facing wildlife, including habitat loss, the illegal wildlife trade and climate change.  Each of the 5 species in the New Big 5 face serious threats to their existence and are listed as Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable. They’re the tip of the iceberg. We hope the New Big 5 can stand for all the world’s wildlife. These 5 animals are a powerful reminder of what we stand to lose.

The project’s message is that all wildlife deserves to exist and every single species needs to be protected. From bees to blue whales, all wildlife is essential to the balance of nature, healthy ecosystems and the future of our planet.

Lions are born with a variety of colourations – some with spots and some without. Even when growing up, some lions keep their spots until adulthood. Perhaps once upon a time all lions may have been spotted and have ‘lost’ them as the climate changed and they adapted to their new environment.

We were not all made to be the same. Like lions, some of us are born with spots, and others aren’t. Some keep their spots until adulthood whilst others lose them growing up. We should celebrate our differences rather than judge each other for them. Each lion looks the way it does for a reason.

We want to give a huge THANK YOU to @wildlifeprotectionsolutions for awarding the Foundation a USD15,000 grant to support anti-poaching efforts. 100% of these funds will be directed towards the APUs at @dinokenggamereserve.

As Covid-19 drags on, we have seen a devastating rise in poaching in our neighbouring areas as well as others. Anti-poaching measures are vital for fighting this ongoing battle and we are so grateful for organizations like Wildlife Protection Solutions for supporting this growing need. Give them a follow to see how else they protect our precious wildlife.

Dinokeng Game Reserve consists of 19 000 hectares of wildlife habitat and is the only free roaming Big 5 Game Reserve that is also on the outskirts of a metropolitan area. In the spirit of Ubuntu, their ethos embodies the notion that through looking after nature, nature will look after us. Their holistic approach towards conservation allows them to model an example of what the future of conservation could be like. Through bringing the wild into the cities, they work towards establishing harmony between the two and rehabilitating land to make the world wild again.

A lion’s tongue is almost as rough as sandpaper.  It is covered in tiny spines, called papillae, which face backwards and are used to scrape meat from bones and dirt from fur.  These spines make the tongue so rough that if a lion licked you enough times on one spot, you would be left without any skin!

Our tongues can be sharp with invisible papillae, and sometimes the words they form can hurt – we all know this. It can be good to get a reminder every now and then that we should think before we speak.
