Riding out to find the two missing pairs. Found one but still missed the other. Watching the cowboys and cowgirls and their horses instinctually know what to do is mesmerizing. Watching them rope is like a dance. A dance that only the cowboy and his horse know the steps to.

The matriarch of the herd. Maybelline. She’s the first sheep I ever fell in love with. I can safely say I’ve never ate lamb, and now, I never can. ? They are just so pure of heart. Well, the ewes are but they rams are... well.... rams.

I’ve sat down to write this so many times I’ve lost count.

You see, I was once like many of you. And in many ways, I still am. The city girl who grew up with dogs and cats. I knew very little of farm and ranch life. What I did know is nothing compared to the reality of that lifestyle.

I married a country boy. One who knew “how to rope and ride”, so to speak. Who grew up around horses and cattle. Who wore cowboy hats that at the time, I thought should be thrown away because of how dirty they were. Never knowing that dirt was a sign of guts, grit and determination. But that’s what it takes to run a farm and ranch.

Tireless hours of animal care. Hours of fence building and mending. Building shelters and plowing the land. Hauling feed, hay and even water in the grueling heat and freezing cold. Tractor work and land clearing. This is the short list of chores. The long list never ends.

I’ve seen social media posts and heard others talk about “how cruel” ranchers and farmers are. But let me tell you, we have more compassion than you can ever imagine. From delivering babies in the middle of the night to busting water troughs every 30 minutes around the clock when it’s below 0.

Our vet bills are outrageous because we never let an animal suffer. We spend more money on feed than I care to admit. We drive 2 hours one way for feed because we only feed our animals the best.

I won’t tell you it’s not sad. I won’t tell you Mother Nature is always kind. I won’t tell you I’ve never cried. Because I’d be lying. And some days, I feel like giving up.

We’ve all seen the slogan “If you ate today, thank a farmer”. That statement is true for everyone. Vegans and vegetarians. Meat eaters and pescatarian.

And before you judge too harshly on choices ranchers and farmers have to make, understand those choices are never easy. Even for us. We feel every loss. We fight to save every life.

Sincerely,
The city girl turned farmer, Laura.
