The Camellia has over 30,000 different forms and colors. This is the one in my yard which I am particularily fond of. They do well an acidic soil, which as it turns out, works well as the tree lives where I am constantly throwing out my used coffee grounds.

Camellias were called the “Japan Rose” by a famous German botanist, where they were found to have been first grown and cultivated throughout the gardens of Japan and China.

The Camellia was first brought over to the United States in 1797. At some point, they reached California and now have a wonderful prescence at the state capitol, and my yard too! In fact, Sacramento is one of 7 “Camellia City” ’s in the United States.

How far are you willing to go to for a flower or two? As it turns out, I'm willing to drive for days all over California. The blooming flowers of California occur between March and all the way through July, depending on elevation. Many flowers show off their true colors right about now.

Never one to keep these sorts of things to myself, I put together a very colorful guide on my blog which details all the locations you can go to see the wildflower blooms. This should keep you busy for the next few months, whether you're in Northern or Southern California.

I must admit, I've considered rolling around in flowers just to know what it feels like, but alas, I flower-view responsibly, sure-footed and from a distance as to not trample them.

It almost seems like the roaring twenties of old. Many months later with one very sore arm, a craving for a bit of nightlife is in the air. I've been excitedly watching weekly stat updates, following as cases go down while businesses feel like they can breathe just a little bit more.

This weekend was the first in a long, long time where I've felt safe living it up with a bit of outdoor dining and tomfoolery. Of course, the ride is not over yet, and there is still plenty of mask wearing, social distancing, and hand-washing happening.

But in between all this? I'm looking forward to someone else making the cocktails and food.
