Here's one more from Funchal (we're coming to an end with those, soon all pictures will have the rainy Berlin background you're used to again): This house immediately amazed me. I don't really know when it was built, people in Funchal I asked assumed that it might have been in the Forties oder Fifties of last century, which makes sense, as the market next door dates back to 1940. However, obviously it leads back all the way to Twenties modernism. It sits at quite a busy corner (no chance to capture it without parked cars) of the city and houses a little coffeeshop called
Cristalina Chique Bar where we had our bica and some nice sandwiches. Funchal of interesting architecture, although it’s a little bit hidden behind everyday life, and the next time I’m there I’ll make sure to spend one or two days chasing it. #ofeneckaufmadeira

When I flew back from Funchal to Berlin, weather was pretty rough, planes couldn’t land. So I spent most of the day at the airport and an extra night in a weird all-inclusive hotel close-by. Obviously, I would have preferred to fly back right away, but then again, it wasn’t too bad. On the same flight, there was this lady with a huge bouquet of flowers. Their heads were hanging a bit after 24 h without water. I felt a bit sorry for her so I went to her and said some nice words. She answered: “Oh no, it’s fine. The delay might have given these flowers the rest. But actually, I bought them more than a week ago at the market. They were still in full bloom so I didn’t want to leave them at our apartment.” So, when you go to Funchal, buy flowers. They last - well, not forever, but for a long time. For example from this old lady who sells them right next to the wonderful old Mercado dos Lavradores building in downtown Funchal. #ofeneckaufmadeira

Back in Berlin, but still quite a bit of Madeira on my picture roll. I loved this quite eclectic ensemble of modernist architecture right in the city centre. Couldn’t find any details, if anyone knows, feel free to comment. #ofeneckaufmadeira

Here‘s a modernist beauty from Funchal: The Casino and the Casino Hotel, built by #oscarniemeyer and opened in 1976. Does anyone recognise the young lady on the last picture? #ferienfürimmer #ofeneckaufmadeira

Two questions popped up in the last days. First one was: Where (and what) the heck is Porto Santo? Quick answer on that: It’s an Island two and a half ferry hours northeast of Madeira. It’s quite small (11 x 5 km), roundabout 5000 people live there. It has an airport, so it also gets its fair share of travellers but all in all its a quite calm place where time passes just a bit slower then on the main Island. The little town is just like you would imagine the “capital” of such a place; the water is wonderful, waves are strong, but not too brutal for a swim.

The second question was: Did I feel safe at all times and how did the pandemic affect the holiday? Obviously, you have to get tested negative before entering Madeira (you can do that at home 72 h prior when coming in from Germany). Before entering Porto Santo, you have to get tested again. The usual rules of distance and hygiene appeal. It’s not mandatory to wear a mask on the streets, most people do it anyway. A thing we don’t do in Germany that is done here all the time is taking the temperature. So, yes, I did feel safe. Yesterday we got tested for the travel back, so the authorities do everything to assure all of that. Madeira needs tourism, so does Porto Santo. People are literally waiting for you guys. Come over, I can highly recommend it. .
