How can products manage dry skin?

A suited cleanser will do a whole world of good. Look for nourishing ingredients and balm, oil, or cream textures that will care for your complexion as they clean.

Exfoliate the right way. Even though you are dry, you still need to buff off those upper layers of the skin. Why? To improve product penetration so all your creams and serums actually penetrate, as well as removing dry flaky skin that feels rough and can cause congestion. Ling Rescue Skin Peel and Synergie Luciderm are gentle enough for even the most delicate of skins.

Rich plant oils and nourishing creams are your friends. Look for fatty acids such as macadamia oil in Huile 27 which will replenish the lost oil in your skin. Omega-rich oils such as Synergie de-Stress also have the added bonus of decreasing inflammation.

Incorporate B vitamins into your routine. Vitamin B in its many forms hydrates, rebuilds the skin barrier, and soothes the skin so it’s a must-have for dry skin.

Skin Word of the Week ✍️ - Squalane / Squalene

Squalene is a lipid that your skin produces naturally and is a component of sebum -the skin's natural oil and its role is to maintain moisture levels in the skin. As we age, our natural production of squalene slows and this can result in a drier complexion. This is where squalane comes in. Commercial squalene was originally sourced from shark liver oil, but now can be sourced from plants too.

Squalane is a lipid that can be sourced from olive oil, rice bran, and sugar cane to name a few. Unlike squalene, it doesn't oxidize quickly making it a great ingredient in skincare products. Squalane has been shown to have moisturising, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant qualities. It's a wonderful all-rounder ingredient.

The Best Treatments for Dry Skin ☺️

In the treatments for dry skin we reach for ingredients and technologies which help to rebuild skin barrier. Facial massage stimulates circulation and improves the absorption of nutrients across the skin. Sonophoresis technology encourages deeper penetration of active ingredients like hyaluronic acid improving moisture in tissue. Led light therapy influences skin regeneration and healing to improve the general strength of the skin.

Our favourite treatments for Dry Skin are:

Essential - best for dry skin that needs an overall reset

Gently Does It - best for dry, sensitive skin that needs some extra TLC

Go Under the Light - best for building the skin barrier in between treatments.

You might have all the right lotions and potions in your bathroom cabinet but are you hydrating and moisturising your skin from within?

Our skin is built from the inside out so if you're feeding it with the right nutrients, you'll be able to see it from the outside!

If you're looking to reduce dryness and dehydration, look at your omega-3 intake. Omega-3 fatty acids make up the cell membranes (strong membranes = less water loss) and our sebum (which means more moisture). You can find omega-3 in oily fish, flaxseeds, nuts, and algae.

The best treatments for dehydrated skin ?

Dehydration is one of the most common conditions we see at the clinic and presents itself as lacklustre skin, flakiness, dullness, and sensitivity.

All our treatments are able to address dehydration as hydration is essential for overall skin health.

For an all-rounder hydrating treatment, we would recommend our Essential facial. It involves sonophoresis which encourages hydrating serums into the deeper layers of the skin for long lasting hydration.

For a more advanced hydrating treatment, our Ultra Synergy uses microneedling to create microchannels in the skin for deep product penetration. This treatment also stimulates circulation, bring water and other nutrients from the blood to your skin.

Dry Skin - Dos ✅ and Don'ts❌

✅ Incorporate oils into your routine. Dry skin is caused by a lack of oil and high-quality oils can help to support your skin.
✅ Do keep up on your Omega 3 and 6. They'll help to produce essential fatty acids that bubble wrap our cells from the inside.
✅ Do have regular facials especially at the change of season. Having treatments helps your skin to prepare for the changes in temperature as well as strengthening the barrier function

❌ Don’t over exfoliate. It’s tempting to do to get rid of the flakey skin but it causes more disruption on the surface. Use gentle acids like lactic to help brighten the skin but also strengthen our natural protective barrier in the skin.
❌ Don’t wash with hot water as this drys out your skin. Keep it to a lukewarm temperature
❌ Don't neglect your hydration routine. Dry skin is likely to be dehydrated as well so make sure you're quenching your skin's thirst

Not sure if you're dry or dehydrated?

It’s a common misconception that dry skin and dehydrated skin are the same things. Being able to recognise the signs of both will enable you to treat and care for your skin far better than ever before.

If you can spare 2 minutes, do a mini skin analysis so you can recognise the signs of dry and dehydrated skin

Gently slide your hand up the side of your cheek. Does your skin feel flaky, dry and rough? Is your skin tight after cleansing? These are signs of dry skin– a lack of oil in the skin and a weak lipid barrier.

Now look in the mirror, are there fine lines present on the forehead and eyes? Does the skin look dull and lacklustre? Does your foundation patch throughout the day? These are signs of dehydrated skin – a lack of water in your skin.

Dry is a skin type whereas dehydration is a skin condition that can occur in all skin types, even oily skin.

Skin Word of the Week ✍️ - Elastin

Elastin, as the name suggests, is a highly elastic protein, allowing the tissues to stretch or contract and then bounce back into their original shape. Along with collagen, it is one of the main components in the dermis. Our natural elastin production slows as we age so to maintain plump, bouncy skin it's important to stimulate it's production. You can do this with vitamin A or vitamin C products, needling or laser based treatments.
