We've been in search of new unicorn ski resorts in Japan, which has been a bit challenging lately considering many of the Nagano/Niigata/Gunma ski resorts have been suffering from yuck snow conditions. We have been hanging out in Gunma waiting for the elusive storm that was meant to arrive a couple of days ago (it hit Nagano/Niigata yesterday). Today we hit this little ski area with about 5-10cm of dust on glacial-like rough crust & it was snowing all day so it improved a little in the afternoon (& it's forecast to snow plenty tonight). Despite the marginal snow conditions (Japoo we're calling it!) we took a look around and the verdict is a bit undecided about whether this ski area is going to excite & entice any powder hounds. It does have some small steepish pitches and there appears to be a little tree skiing (albeit tight trees mostly). You wouldn't go there especially, but it's worth including for a day on road trip of Gunma: https://www.powderhounds.com/Japan/Honshu/Oguna-Hotaka.aspx

Thank goodness for an airbag backpack!!???

Today we visited a small ski area in the Katashina area of Gunma and were pleasantly surprised with the off-piste tree skiing on offer. Not really a destination resort but combine this with a day or two at neighbouring resort Oze Iwakura and you will find some fantastic skiing. PS, these resorts are going to get around 60+ cm of fresh cold snow over the next few days!!!
