Let's drive down Memory Lane and visit the iconic Southgate Publix Super Market.

Strip malls were still a groundbreaking idea when we broke ground on Southgate Shopping Center in 1957. Motor-friendly mini-malls already peppered the Midwest, but Southgate was one of Florida’s first.

Our founder, George Jenkins, believed that if we built it, shoppers would come. And shoppers did. Historic Lakeland businesses also set up shop in Southgate’s many storefronts.

Mr. George wanted an eye-catching landmark to bring in people passing by. We tapped local architect Donovan Dean, a master of mid-century modern design, to make it happen.

Donovan put the “arch” in Southgate’s architecture: an orange bow breaking a green plane, like a rocket launching to the stars. (This was during the Space Race, after all.)

The Southgate Publix itself was a roadside attraction. To show off the store’s size, some clever folks drove a Fiat 500 down its big, breezy aisles. Southgate also debuted our “neon V” and a particular tagline on its bright, bold façade.

We started selling fresh bouquets in our first Publix Super Market to scratch a trip to the florist off our customers’ to-do lists.

As Publix grew, we began picking more than just seasonal blooms, turning our small kiosks into flower shops selling perennials, balloon bouquets, custom arrangements, and more.

During the 1970s and ’80s, visiting the Floral department became a full-fledged experience. Check out the lattice panels, garden arbors, and leafy plants dangling from wooden beams.

Do you have special memories visiting one of our Floral departments? Share them with us!
