September is National Pain Awareness Month and as someone with severe, chronic pain, I think it’s extra important to shine a bright light on a condition that millions of people across the US experience.

#ad as a @sunbeam_us Ambassador, I’m happy that they are proudly sponsoring the U.S. Pain Foundation’s 2021 Pain Awareness Month initiative, #PainCounts. The U.S. Pain Foundation is a nonprofit that aims to empower, educate and advocate for people experiencing pain due to a chronic illness.

I personally experience debilitating nerve pain that I treat with medication and by drinking a lot of water throughout the day. I also deal with pain in my elbows, back and neck from pushing my wheelchair constantly. For this I just combination heat and cold therapy with prescribed medication.

Finding relief for pain is very individualized and is made up of one, or a combination of treatments.

Possible treatments consist of medications, neuromodulation, restorative therapies and self-management techniques, like heat and cold therapy.

I want to inspire people by talking about confidence and body positivity… by being totally raw and real. But I guarantee you that every single “body positive“ model on Instagram is not body positive every single day. None of us have figured it out 100% and I allow myself to have those days of doubt.

BUT. My body is powerful. I almost lost my life the day I had a spinal cord injury and my body kept fighting. My body literally saved me.

because of my injury I now have to use a catheter and a leg bag, my stomach pokes out because I don’t have abs and… No one can see my awesome ass!

but I accept that I am not perfect and do my very best to focus on what I love. If there’s anything you do today… be kind to yourself

Traveling has always been something I have dreamed of but after my injury, it seemed completely impossible. On top of planning a vacation, you have to figure out so much and there are so many worries.

•Will the airline break my chair? (Happened to me)
•Will the people drop me transferring me to the tiny aisle chair that gets you onto the plane? (Happened to me)
•The room says accessible but is it really?

I have to find out

•Can I get into the room
•Can I Get through the bathroom door. Accessible shower?
•how high is the bed?
•can I get into the restaurants?
•Is there a way to get to the beach?
•Are there any accessible activities?
•Can you get to the pool and can you get in?
•is there accessible transportation?

many people with serious physical disabilities do travel alone. I do personally need the help. I have flown alone.

Even though it’s so hard, it’s so worth it. Hopefully the world will become more accessible, including the US. And thank you mom for being the best travel buddy ?
