Back home in Pittsburgh this week and looking forward to spending some much-needed time outdoors! For those who don’t know, my first full-time job out of college was teaching conservation skills to young people in order to empower them to conserve public lands in their own communities. If I’m being honest it was a walk in the park (literally) hanging with teenagers and getting dirty all day. Full Circle Moment: I was recently asked to partner with @publiclandsshop to spread the word about their brand new store for outdoors enthusiasts like myself. Aside from carrying all the best gear their mission is in alignment with my personal beliefs about making green spaces accessible to ALL. It’s well documented that spending time outdoors works wonders for your mental and physical health, however people who look like me and grow up in the inner city rarely have the opportunities that others enjoy. Between “sundown towns” in rural areas and underfunded city parks there’s been a serious lack of Black people enjoying public lands, but I’m glad to see the trajectory beginning to change and the outdoors being less taboo.
