Balancing strength and flexibility ? You can pull or push yourself into a position - but can you stay there if you let go? ? Or can you get into a position without the push or pull or assist?

Flexibility is great. It improves mobility, posture, muscle coordination, reduces the risk of injuries and muscle soreness. But it’s not so great if you don’t have the strength to support it. When we are flexible without strength or strong without flexibility, we are imbalanced. This imbalance can lead to injury. Correcting muscle imbalances requires a combination of strengthening the underactive muscles and stretching the overactive (tight) ones. In this image, I’m showing an example of holding myself in a position - my head is holding my feet in place and my arms are assisting my backbend. The entire pose isn’t passive, but unlike the bottom image, some major muscles groups aren’t doing any work to create the shape. ?

This is a topic that never gets old (for me) and I emphasize the need for the balance of strength and flexibility in the way I teach. The physical practice of yoga should feel good and support a functional body. Does your practice feel good? ?

Perspective ? 1 or 2? Do you like to change things up or keep things ‘as they should be’? I did a backbend against a wall a few years ago and noticed a trend of rotating the image sideways and how it took on a whole new feeling (for me, anyway ?) I’ve spent the better part of my life doing things as I perceive to be the ‘right way’. I’ve reached a point where I need to go sideways from time to time.?

Trust ? Have you ever practiced yoga with a partner? Or tried acro or another modality that involves two or more people to create a flow or a shape? Partner yoga is a study in body awareness, trust, surrender and communication. It’s a beautiful practice in so many ways. For me, someone who likes to be ‘in control’, this practice forces me to accept that I’m not in control - that it’s a partnership.?

Assisted stretching ? 1,2,3 or 4? Which shape do you like the best? They’re similar but different, with the biggest difference being the arm positions. This week, the theme of my classes has been all about hip flexors and hamstrings. We’ve been balancing strength with flexibility to support controlled mobility (movement). These standing poses give a big assisted stretch to both the hip flexors and hamstrings.

I was playing around with some ‘non-traditional’ chapasana variations, bordering on natarajasana (a hybrid?) in keeping with my theme of exploration that I talked about in my last post. Always inspired by the beautiful sculptures my friends make with their bodies. Thank you @anniejames.yoga for always rocking the flipped grip versions and reminding me to attempt them @kimterpstra_yoga for inspiring the second, twisty shape. ?

Dance! ? Natarajasana or Dancer’s pose has always been one of my all-time favorite poses. It embodies strength, flexibility, balance, focus, awareness and grace. ? I like to explore poses - moving into variations I’ve seen or going down my own path of creativity. Finding new challenges in poses where I feel solid in my foundation keeps things fresh and interesting for me. ? What about you? Are you more of a traditionalist or do you like to color outside the lines? Do you have a favorite natarajasana variation you like to practice or maybe a favorite one of mine? Swipe left to see a few more of my favorites - the last one was just for fun ?✌?

Summer fun ♥️ Getting outside and moving in the summer sunshine is my favorite. I move my body outside year round because I love to be outside - but there’s nothing better than moving and flowing in the summer heat. Especially next to a pool, lake or any body of water where I can cool down immediately afterwards. ♥️ What’s your favorite season?

Sunday funday ? It had been a little while since I’ve attempted this variation on a cow pose and my memory was that is was really challenging. Moving into this time felt comfortable and familiar, unlike my first attempt.

The more I move my body and understand how the body moves, finding access to deeper poses comes faster and feels better. It’s not just doing - it’s understanding what is happening where in my body. Where am I flexing? Where am I extending? Where can I soften? Contract? Expand? How is my breath impacting the movement? Understanding is what allows me to move into depth with comfort and control. ? Swipe left to see an earlier phase of the pose. ?

Assess before depth ♥️ Hollowback was one of those shapes that took me a while to understand in my body - especially the version without a wall (we’ll get to that later, post coming soon). It’s a backbend with closed hips, so the backbend comes more from the thoracic spine than low lumbar, where backbends normally originate due to the natural curve in the spine. Shoulder mobility is necessary to assist in the space in the spine. ♥️

The version on the left is the same as the right, it just lacks the depth. (Swipe left for a rotated image that I think makes it easier to see the difference in the shoulders and spine). Playing with the inversion by slowly beginning to drop the hips while pressing the chest out through the shoulders sets a foundation for greater depth. The wall is also a great support if you’re new to this one. I recommend a little wrist warm up and cool down when spending time upside down on the hands, too. ♥️

Check out my stories for a bts of this glamorous parking garage space I use ? Wearing my favorite combination of @aloyoga and @toesox ♥️ #invert #upsidedown #foundation #foundationsfirst #hollowback #yogatutorial #yogateacher #yogastudent #flexible #strong #mobile #mobilitytraining
