?? Dear friends of the Salon du dessin,

For nearly a year now, the health crisis we have been experiencing has had a severe and unprecedented impact on the world of culture. If we, as art lovers, suffer from not being able to visit museums anymore, the economic situation in which some museum institutions find themselves becomes extremely worrying. This is unfortunately the case of one of the oldest and most faithful partners of the Salon du dessin: the Domaine de Chantilly.

It's Thursday, a look back at the Salon du Dessin of 2018, do you remember?

The Salon du dessin will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. Due to the pandemic, the fair, which usually takes place in March, will be held from Wednesday, June 9, to Saturday, June 12, 2021 (opening June 8). The Palais Brongniart in Paris will offer an intimate setting for 39 drawing experts from France and abroad. The coming edition will be accompanied by a digital version.

The Salon du dessin will also sponsor Drawing week, an off-site event that includes private visits to some 20 partner museums, which have proved highly popular with collectors and art lovers for the past 22 years.

In the meantime, we invite you to leaf through the catalog of the 2020 edition: https://www.salondudessin.com/en/summary (via link in bio).

?? The Salon du Dessin will celebrate its 30th anniversary at the Palais Brongniart on June 9 - 12, 2021. (French below)

Due to the pandemic, the Salon du Dessin, which usually held at the end of March, will be held Wednesday, June 9, to Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the Palais Brongniart in Paris. The opening is scheduled for Tuesday, June 8, 2021.

The Salon du Dessin and the Drawing Now Art Fair (@DrawingNowArtFair) have agreed to postpone their events to the same dates. Since there have been no other fairs focusing on drawing in 2020, Paris will truly be the capital of drawing during the second week of June 2021.

The 2021 edition of the Salon du Dessin will mark the 30th anniversary of the fair, which has increased appreciation for the art of drawing and has become the epicenter of events focusing on the graphic arts for one week every year. Founded in 1991 by nine dealers, the Salon du Dessin is solidly anchored in the international art-fair scene yet has retained its intimate scale and selective character, with the number of exhibitors limited to 39. The coming edition will be accompanied by a digital version.

This year’s museum exhibition at the fair will be entrusted to the Musées de Marseille. Its theme, “aspects of nature,

A throwback to the Salon du Dessin of 2014, where 13,000 art lovers and collectors assembled in the magnificent Palais Brongniart around their shared passion for drawings. Among the 1,000 treasures on display was a magnificent 'Head of a monk wearing a hood, seen in three quarter view', by Baccio della Porta, called Fra Bartolomeo (1472-1517). This masterpiece drawing, executed in black chalk with stumping, heightened with white with a partial sketch in red chalk, found a buyer at Jean-Luc Baroni (London).

Throughout their marriage, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were enthusiastic patrons (and practitioners) of the art of watercolour painting. They formed a collection of thousands of watercolours, many illustrating scenes of their public and private lives, and often spent happy evenings together organising their acquisitions into albums.
To mark the bicentenary of the births of both Victoria and Albert, a touring exhibition of their watercolour collection is organised. 'Victoria and Albert: Our Lives in Watercolour' will open later this year at The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, and includes many works that are displayed for the first time.

In September 1843 Queen Victoria travelled abroad for the first time, visiting Louis-Philippe, King of the French, at the Château d’Eu in Normandy. This was a visit of great historical significance, being the first time a British sovereign had visited France since the meeting of Henry VIII and Francis I in 1520 (known as the Field of the Cloth of Gold). When Louis-Philippe made a reciprocal visit to Windsor the following year he brought with him a sumptuous album of watercolours as a gift for Victoria, of which this was one. Painted by leading French artists, the watercolours illustrated events that took place during the visit and the rooms Victoria and Albert occupied at Eu.

To commemorate Dante Alighieri's 700th year since the medieval poet died, the @UffiziGalleries invites to explore his illustrated 'La divina commedia'. Dante's three-part odyssey through heaven, hell and purgatory was accompanied by 88 illustrations by Renaissance artist Federico Zuccari (c. 1540/1541 – 1609). A free virtual exhibition on the museum's website enables you to travel through captivating descriptions and HD images of these most rarely-seen sketches.

The drawing shown here simultaneously portrays the main episodes of the first canto of Hell and the beginning of Dante's (1265 - 1321) journey, when he finds himself, lost and frightened, in the dark wood (vv. 1-12). On the left, the poet is in fact clutching on to a tree, while just beside him he sees the hill, lightened by the sun's rays. Taking heart, he tries to climb up the rock, but encounters the tree terrible beasts blocking his way: the leopard, the she-wold and the lion, respectively symbols of the sins of lust, avarice and pride (vv. 32-33; 54-51).

The names of the three shortlisted artists for the Contemporary Art Foundation Drawing Prize Daniel et Florence Guerlain have been announced. Among them is French artist Françoise Pétrovitch (*1964).

Since the mid 1990s, @FrancoisePetrovitch has adopted a vocabulary associated with adolescence and childhood, and by extension its symbolism and mythology. The figures of young girls and boys that recurrently appear across her works on paper, her paintings, mural drawings, sculptures and installations are above all archetypes and are completely disassociated from any narrative.

The artist lives and works in Cachan and is represented by @SemioseGalerie.

Merry Christmas to all our Drawing loving friends around the world! We hope to see you again at our next edition in Palais Brongniart in Paris in the new year, from June 8 - 12, 2021.

Today we share a drawing from our latest catalogue, a sheet by Hans Süss von Kulmbach (1476 - 1528), 'The Mass of the Angels', c. 1512. Pen in brown ink, 28.8 x 21.7 cm. Von Kulmbach was trained by Jacopo de' Barbari and Albrecht Dürer. Dürer and Von Kulmbach collaborated closely and after Dürer retired from painting altarpieces in 1510, Von Kulmbach took over most of his commissions. He had his own workshop in Nuremberg and at times worked in Kraków. He also created artworks for emperor Maximilian I and for Margrave Casimir Hohenzollern von Brandenburg-Kulmbach. This drawing is from the Arnoldi-Livie gallery @arnoldi_livie in Munich. Enjoy more drawings online at https://www.salondudessin.com/en/publications-2/catalogs/ (link in bio).
