I know many of us are sharing in a collective exhale right now, but party lines aside, there is no president than can unite us, WE have to unite us. This is an incredible moment in history that I will teach my children about. I am so proud of every one of you who took the time to vote in Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House. I pledge to stay awake, informed, and active in my home and community. I want to teach my kids self love, inclusion of all genders, how to be anti-racist, and how we can protect and preserve our beautiful mother, Earth. ✌??

Mask anxiety. On an early morning a couple weeks ago, I was home alone with my two kids and feeling the monotony set in. I had heard public parks were ‘reopened’ after being closed a few days prior (as part of the tighter restrictions in SB county after the Thanksgiving COVID surge) and decided to pack some snacks and head out to a nearby spot. As we parked I could see we were the only ones in sight, so I told Simone we didn’t need to wear our masks, but I tossed them in my bag just in case, and we took off to play. About 10 minutes into our jungle gym action we heard a siren in the distance that was growing closer. I could see a newfound fear take over my daughter’s face and as her eyes widened she exclaimed, “Mama! I need my mask!” I shook my head no - no what was she talking about? I asked her. The intensity of her voice trembled once again, “Mama I need my mask! I need my mask! The police are coming!” Fury jolted up my throat. I wanted to scream. I wanted to shout at her, “Are you crazy, why are you saying that!?” Holding back tears and keeping a calm tone, I took the path of least resistance (I’d unpack the emotions later) and went to get her mask. Her tiny three-year-old hands worked quickly to position the mask over her nose and mouth. As her fear subsided, mine grew. Why? Who taught her this? Is this really the world I’m raising my child in? How the fuck did it come to this?

As upsetting and infuriating as this experience was for me, my takeaway is gratitude for this time. It has summoned expansion, flexibility, and the fierceness we all need to thrive in the future. Plus, a wide-eyed awareness of police isn’t such a bad thing in America today.

This photo is of Simone and her sweet pal, Alma, taken back in October on their first day of ballet class. Mid-pandemic we found a local dance studio and teacher willing to open up to just our pod, which of course had to end with the latest surge of the virus and statewide closures here in California.
