The Suri live in the Northern Omo valley and are closely connected to the Mursi in Mago National park and the Kapicho in South Sudan. They are pastoralists pursuing a subsistence and sustainable life in an area which, until recently, was very isolated. These tribal groups are all under threat from the Gibe III dam depriving them of water, agribusiness which through the government has taken their land, deliberate acculturation, imposition of religions which are alien to them, more roads and therefore more access, insensitive tourism, westernisation as traders venture into the area and telecommunications. A little Bedouin girl from Socotra, Yemen. There are approximately 60000 people living on Socotra many of whom are Bedouin. There are villages in the mountains which are remote and have little access to Hadibo, the island capital. This little girl was waif like with big eyes and like all the people on the island, friendly and welcoming. I’m hoping to run a photo tour to Socotra in February 2023. Thirty percent of its species are endemic from being isolated in the Indian Ocean. Its the most incredible island I’ve ever visited. Mundari boy milking. The Mundari, when covered with ash they appear as apparitions or ghosts especially when their is dust and smoke in the air. They gather the dung in the morning, dry it by spreading it out and then use it as fuel for their fires. And so this cyclical use of ash continues. The men also shower using the urine of their cattle which acts as an antiseptic and colours their hair orange! These people have a very sustainable existence and their connection with nature should be a message to us all. These ancient practices ensure harmony with the environment and have a small ecological footprint which is local and ensures cultural longevity. All my photos/images are for sale, contact me by PM. A man of the Djapto (Wodaabe) at the Gerewol in Chad. Once a year in Chad these nomads come together in a festival known as the Gerewol. This is a beauty pageant for the men so that they might be selected by the women/girls of the tribe. The women are usually younger than the men and are seen as fair game in a society which is polygamous and polygynous. The men adorn themselves using a diversity of facial paint colours and the whites of the eye and teeth colour are particularly important. So too their outfits, which are embellished with beads, buttons and baubles in the brightest of colours. Mirrored tunics and hats add to the exuberance and adornment. The overall appearance with the paint, makeup and outfits can only be described as feminine from our cultural perspective. All my photos/images are for sale, contact me by PM.

Over 6,000 houses were built before the eleventh century—largely using rammed earth. It occupies the site of the ancient pre-Islamic stronghold of Ghumdān, which may date to the 1st and 2nd century bce.

Fish vendor in Hadibo, Socotra, Yemen. The people of Socotra are comprised of Bedouins in the mountains and inland but on the coast they are a mix of Yemeni and those of African origins. Fishing is integral to their lives and the coast is still replete with fish and wonderful reefs. There are in excess of 60000 people living on the island which is cut off for part of the year due to the monsoon. The island has only a thousand visitors a year and is renowned for its endemicity. In excess of 30% of the species are endemic. I hope to take a small photo tour here in 2023. Young Mundari girl in Church, Kworonit, Terekeka, South Sudan. These people have a very sustainable existence and their connection with nature should be a message to us all. These ancient practices ensure harmony with the environment and have a small ecological footprint which is local and ensures cultural longevity. Children are an integral part of ‘cattle camp’ life. They help to gather and dry dung to fuel fires, they tether and lead the Ankole Watusi cattle after they come back from grazing to their stakes, they help with massaging the cattle and they apply ash to themselves to mitigate against bites from tsetse flies and mosquitoes. They are often seem immersing themselves under a flow of urine which acts as an antiseptic and also turns their hair orange. I also watched them blowing into cows vaginas to encourage a flow of milk. Papuan man, Mt Hagen, PNG. The Mt Hagen Highland Show event itself is huge. Over 40 tribes parade, sing and dance in front of visitors. Tourism is small, as yet, in PNG but it has immense value in keeping cultural traditions alive. The people are very amicable and welcoming. Possibly the easiest place, I have been, to take photos. They love to talk and relish attention.

Happy New Year to all my followers. May 2022 be one in which we all fulfil our hopes. Once a year in Chad these nomads come together in a festival known as the Gerewol. This is a beauty pageant for the men so that they might be selected by the women/girls of the tribe.
