Our new report, “Protecting our world from future pandemics,” exposes the short-fallings in the laws of G20 countries that continue to cruelly exploit wildlife and leave the world vulnerable to future pandemics, including Canada.

?The trade’s main regulatory body – the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) – has no focus on preventing zoonotic disease.

?There is little or no disease screening of imported wild animals, allowing the undetected movement of pathogens across global boundaries.

?The number of people involved in the wildlife trade supply chain provides ample opportunity for infectious disease transmission.

Leaders must come together and call for a global wildlife trade ban before it’s too late.

For over two years, @PetSmart/@PetSmartCanada has ignored our letters and offers of support and guidance. But we’re not going away. Dozens of animal welfare experts and organisations, and our amazing supporters (many of whom are also PetSmart customers!) are demanding that they listen and take action to end the sale of wild animals in PetSmart stores. About 44,000 people have already signed our petition in Canada and the US, and that number continues to grow.

The snakes, lizards, tortoises, and frogs you see in PetSmart stores are part of a global trade in wildlife that is causing unimaginable suffering. It’s time to end this. Sign the petition to #StopPetSmart. Link in bio!

?Animals move our world?

Here are five amazing animal successes you helped achieve last month.

?You moved South Africa to phase out captive lion breeding
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has made crucial and long-awaited steps towards changing the captive lion breeding industry in South Africa. It’s a courageous move, taking the first steps in a commitment to long-lasting and meaningful change.

?You rescued a captive bear and gave him a new home forever
An illegally captive, Asiatic black bear named Cam was rescued from bear bile farming in Hai Phong province in Vietnam. We came together with @four_paws_international, @env.wildlife and local authorities to rescue Cam and give him a new life.

?You moved four Chinese creative companies to become wildlife-friendly
Base Media, Beijing Phenom Films, Illumina and TOPWORKS (Beijing) Culture Media signed our wildlife-friendly pledge, promising not to use captive wild animals in all their future TV, films and videos. Creative industries have an incredible opportunity to use their content, platform and reach to come together for wildlife and our planet.

?You exposed factory farms for fuelling the superbug crisis
Our new report, Silent superbug killers in a river near you, revealed that public waterways next to factory farms in Canada, Spain, Thailand and the US, contain antibiotic resistance genes that are dangerous to public health, and exposed factory farming's impact on animals, people, and the planet.

?You inspired Taco Bell US to introduce a plant-based product
Dubbed the Cravetarian Taco, the new boldly seasoned protein product made from a blend of chickpeas and pea, will be tested for a limited time at a location in Tustin, California. The announcement follows conversations we've had with them about the importance of protein diversification. Around the world, food companies are expanding their menus to include more plant-based options.

A permanent ban on wildlife trade is the only long-term solution to keeping wild animals wild, eliminating animal suffering, and all importantly, preventing major health epidemics.

We are relieved this pangolin was recovered and will be released back into the wild, but with the huge number stolen from their natural habitats each year we must do more to protect them.

Despite being highly protected, pangolins are the world’s most trafficked mammal. These critically endangered animals are poached from the wild and often placed in squalid, cramped cages, creating a lethal hotbed of disease, as well as causing enormous suffering and cruelty.

It's widely thought that pangolins are the intermediary animal that passed COVID-19 from bats to humans, which further proves we need to keep wild animals in the wild, where they belong.

*Please note we will not tolerate any anti-Asian comments or hate as the wildlife trade is a global issue and many countries, including Canada, play a vital role in keeping this dangerous and cruel trade in operation. Racist and hateful comments will be deleted and those accounts will be banned from commenting again on our posts. Remember: Kindness is limitless. Thank you.
