"Chicks dig scars" One of my favorite pictures from my shoot with @cyc_eye . Why? Because my scars (well, some of them) are on full display. Last Fall, I had a lifechanging surgery to remove a 3 pound tumor from my uterus. It left me with 5 significant scars and a new bellybutton. My body will never be the way it was before; never look "perfect" again. And I'm 1000% cool with that. I dig my scars. They're a permanent reminder of my victory. They say, "You cannot be what you cannot see." So let me show you... Recent US statistics have shown that as late as 2015, women made up less than 24% of those employed in the tech industry. Less than 10% of scientists and engineers are women of color. The time is now to create a new reality for young girls in tech. The goal is for girls, particularly girls of color, to envision themselves in careers not traditionally visible to them. When I was a kid, my Dad put my little brother and me in every athletic activity under the sun. T-ball introduced me to healthy competition. #Soccer showed me that if I really wanted something, it was up to me to take it. #Track taught me how to push myself beyond my physical and mental limits. #Football made me brave and proved that there was nothing a guy could do that I couldn't do better. #Basketball ... well, basketball taught me what I wasn't really good at! Sports were my everything, and shaped so much of the woman I am today. I was privileged to grow up with a family, schools, and a community with ample resources to afford me a childhood rich in these character-building activities. Frankly, kids need sports. And every child deserves to experience the ways in which sports help to enrich young lives. That's why I was honored to join @therealmikezombie and @sixononprofit for their 5th Annual Celebrity Basketball Game over the weekend(I promise, it did not play). The game is HUGE and brings the community together to raise money to fund sports programs and equipment for the very deserving kids of Willingboro, NJ.
