A couple favorites from yesterday afternoon (just added a few more to my blog post from the evening - click on my profile link if you want to check out more images from yesterday). Continuing to dance between playing with new photo angles (love this one that was shot straight down with Aaron's feet, our cats, and a couple decks of cards) + the tried and true selfie (Simon stopped by the house yesterday evening to pick something up). I'm enjoying giving myself permission to capture what I capture and am looking forward to the creative activity of bringing it all together in an album.

One of my personal goals with #weekinthelife photos is to see if I can take some photos that are different/show a different scene than the ones I've taken before or the familiar ones I usually take. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the repetition of photos from year to year because I feel like that's so representative of how life unfolds but/and I also love the challenge to try out some other angles/views/etc.

After I wrapped up my work day yesterday around 7pm Aaron and I met up in the bathtub. We often meet up here in the evening when our kids are at their other homes. It's our place to catch up on the day, have a glass of wine, listen to music, and simply connect. I knew I wanted to see if I could get a photo of this coming together because it's a part of our lives that I really treasure and I haven't tried to take a shot like this that got both of us in the frame in the tub. I could have also used a remote but I have to find it around here first - it's currently eluding me.

To set up this shot I carried a little side table into our bathroom and set my DSLR on top. I took a test shot to check the focal point and then set the timer (Aaron was already in) + then headed back over to the tub and slipped in. Sam the cat was totally a bonus. The original photo right out of the camera is pretty dark so I played around with curves in the @acolorstory app to lighten up the whole thing (the window is totally blown out but I'm okay with that).

Worth it.

All this to say: have fun with the photography piece of this project. Get curious. Try different settings + angles + see what you come up with! It's honestly one of my favorite things about embarking on this project each year.

Week In The Life 2021 is underway! I’ll be sharing a compilation of my photos + words from the previous day each morning on my blog (starting tomorrow). I started my day today with an annual exam ⭐️ (all good) + continue to love using the remote on my Apple Watch to trigger the shutter on my camera phone (made it easy to take this one today). Lots on my work list today so I’m spending most of my day in my office making it a pretty normal Monday. #aeweekinthelife #weekinthelife2021 #weekinthelife

Moments of joy. Moments of sadness. Moments of boredom. Moments of chaos. Moments of quiet. Moments where I had to go in my room + close the door because it was so darn loud. Moments that repeat. Moments that take my breath away. Moments that seemed annoying at the time. Moments of laughter. Moments of learning. Moments that will simply never exist again.

Back in 2005 I created an album project because I had agreed to teach an album class at a scrapbook magazine event (thank you Creating Keepsakes). I knew that I valued everyday life storytelling with an emphasis on the words + the photos so creating an album around those kind of stories seemed like a natural extension of what I was already documenting.

Fast forward to 2021 and next week I'll be embarking on this project for the 16th time. Seven days. 168 hours. I'm so excited to see what stories I capture this time around. I love the invitation to get curious about my life right now and really pay attention to the rhythms + routines of what's real for me at this point in time.

As I was getting ready for today's #weekinthelife Prep Day (details via my profile link) I carried all my albums from my office into my bedroom and laid them out on the floor before filming myself talking about the ways I've approached the project over the years. As I sat on the floor flipping through each one I thought to myself: this is my life reflected back to me via stories and photos. These albums are time capsules that include highs and lows and everything in between for seven days in a row each year.

I write about the basic stuff. I take photos of the basic stuff. It's what our lives are made of day to day to day. Worth the work of documenting? 100%.

In today's Craft The Story video (Episode 18) I’m taking you along with me as I finish up the last two stories in my #aepiecesofus project for 2021. I totally love working inside these little notebooks - it's a nice departure from traditional scrapbook pages + pocket pages and man do they just feel good in your hands.

Thanks again for playing along with this series and sharing photos + words from your own life. I'll be adding to this felt folio later this year with a new notebook created for the Pieces Of Home (#aepiecesofhome) project. Look for more information on that later this summer/early fall.

Last weekend I spent a little time organizing my book stack(s) and put all the ones I’ve recently (since the start of the year) started + not finished in one pile so I could focus on finishing those up. I’m getting more comfortable walking away from books that don’t keep my attention but I’m also always interested in why a book might not be resonating. Right now I’m pretty aware that it’s probably more of a “me” issue rather than the books themselves - my own attention has ebbed + flowed for a number of reasons.

All that to say I was able to finish up two books I’d started in the last few months this past weekend and I’m so glad I went in that direction as I think both of them are totally worth reading.

No One Is Talking About This came to my attention via an email from @bookshop_org. Out of all the books I’ve read in recent memory it challenged me stylistically + content-wise and I found myself having to re-read passages again + again to try to make sense of what I was reading. It often felt like I was reading a foreign language that was English “adjacent” - which if you tried to read social media (aka “the portal” in the book) in the way she’s writing I could totally see it feeling disjointed and erratic with lots of inside-jokes. I started getting frustrated which is why I set it aside initially but I’m so glad I continued on to the end. The book goes from “internet world” to “real world” to tell the story of a brutally beautiful life-altering experience. After making it through to the end I actually kinda think it’s a modern masterpiece of writing. Definitely not an easy read and the subject matter at the end might be triggering (read other reviews).

I’m also really glad I pushed through on Infinite Country. I have less to say about it other than it’s a short, powerful novel that helps create compassion + empathy + understanding and I’m totally here for that kind of storytelling.
