Yes, I used the tips I mentioned before and landed a completely new role in my same company. I finally start next Monday and for the first time in 20 years, I won’t be doing accounting. I’ve networked and interviewed my way to a client support role by highlighting my transferable skills that would be beneficial to the new role.

I’m excited about trying something new and not having to start from scratch. My company has always discussed internal mobility and I made sure to attend every meeting or discussion on the topic. I shared my interest in moving to a different area to trusted mentors and was able to have the first interview for a role that peaked my interest as soon as it opened up. I actually got the offer in January but it only became official recently since my team kept me for three months to finish the audit, understandably so. I’m so ready to learn and tackle something new and the best part is, the role is based in my hometown of Miami! A new role with a transfer, right where I want to be!

It’s been a long time coming, but I am home, new beginnings and all.

FIVE TIPS FOR THOSE CONSIDERING A CAREER CHANGE...

For many having worked in the same field for over 15 or more years, trying something completely new may not feel like an option. Depending on your speciality, there may not be a lot of wiggle room but there is always the possibility to try a part time passion project. For one, my blog has allowed me to pursue my creative and social side I wouldn’t usually get from my work as an accountant. But if you are still considering jumping into something completely new or looking for that role that really fits your purpose, here are five tips to help:

1️⃣Identify what you like about your current role. Think about the aspects that you do enjoy; is it the creative space, do you like number crunching, etc? Assess your likes and dislikes to pinpoint what you want to look for in your next move.
2️⃣Assess your strengths and skill gaps. How many of your current skills are transferable? Everyone has transferable skills, whether they involve managing, communication, leadership, or problem solving.
3️⃣Look into different industries. Perhaps it is not what you do but the specific industry you do it in. For me, accounting in the travel industry (where i first started out) wasn’t as appealing to me as the asset management industry.
4️⃣Look at different roles in the same company. As I mentioned before, transferable skills may be easier to showcase within the same company. Internal mobility can be an easier way to get involved in something new without starting from scratch. Many companies will offer roles internally before going outside to recruit.
5️⃣Network, network, network. It’s so important to get out there and put yourself in networking situations. By speaking to others, you will learning about industry trends, current openings, and allows you to vocalize your interest in something new. Mentoring opportunities also assist with your networking, make sure to get involved in those.

Wishing everyone a blessed Easter! Enjoying this wonderful family, starting off with Easter service and then surprising Chloé and Céline with their Easter baskets!

When we first moved to Astoria, Ricardo and I used to walk to church every Sunday and then enjoy brunch afterwards. After the girls were born, we didn’t go as much mainly because we were exhausted and couldn’t get up early enough. Then last year happened and we hadn’t been to a service in over a year until today. So it was so lovely going back to service today with the girls, Chloé even said she liked it so much! Looking forward to more days like this!

ITS OFFICIALLY THE WEEKEND...

Happy Good Friday to everyone. On another happy note, year end at work is finally over, all my fellow accountants will understand. It’s been a crazy and hectic three months trying to work through an audit and file financial statements for five of my real estate funds but that is finally all wrapped up. And no, I don’t do taxes!!!

Our year end is actually three months after December 31st and it seems like forever. There are tons of items to review, make sure there is sufficient documented support for everything and ensure the clients receive their reports before the deadline. This is extremely oversimplifying it all but it’s non-stop until we file, which happened on March 30th. This is why I planned my kids birth to coincide with year end, that was the best time to be on maternity leave. The hours are hard on moms trying to juggle this career and family! That is something to dive into more another time.

I always knew I wanted to be an accountant. Went to school for it, became a certified public accountant (CPA), and have been working in Alternatives investments for the majority of my career. I’ve been doing this work for so long and even though I actually like accounting, sometimes I think about starting fresh and doing something completely new.
