“Art has healing power ... It’s healing for the person who is being portrayed, the subject as well as the artist.”

As Founder and Executive Director of Operation Restoration, Syrita Steib creates opportunities for formerly incarcerated women, eradicating the roadblocks that she faced when returning to society after serving nearly 10 years in prison.

Syrita served as co-curator of “(Per)Sister: Incarcerated Women of Louisiana,” an exhibition organized by Tulane University's Newcomb Art Museum. The show examined the prison system through the stories of those who experienced it, illuminating the critical issues facing incarcerated women nationwide.

We are excited to welcome Syrita as special guest for our next

Dan Rule’s video work, “Magic Mountain,” opens up through the reflection in a body of water looking up at a 3D model of Mount Rainer; as if in a scene of Lewis Carrol’s 1871 “Through the Looking Glass” —an opposite world—which nods to Rule’s appropriated collage animation elements from Walt Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” (1951).

Echoing nature sounds and a beating drum fill the auditory scene both removed and ironic as nature and animals are not ever seen throughout the video. The combination of these elements create a surreal otherworldly landscape that suggests extinction or moments after a natural disaster and a new American landscape.

“Make America What America Must Become,” An Exhibition of Gulf South Artists is on view at the CAC until April 25, 2021. Tickets must be reserved in advance online. Reserve tickets via the link in our bio.
