Today is #worldcancerday , and I wanted to take a moment to tell you all how much I appreciate this little slice of the internet, this fierce community of #cancerstudents, #cancergrads, advocates, friends & family who continue to show up for each other. Sharing your stories, grief and hard fought wisdom that stems from some of the most difficult trials a person can face in their lifetime continues to help me process and heal from my own diagnosis. If you’re reading this and have been profoundly affected by cancer, you aren’t alone.
I wish there didn’t have to be a World Cancer Day, but until that day comes, I’ll continue to advocate for those of us who are currently reeling from it and for those of us lucky enough to try and rebuild our lives and sense of self after it. Thank you for helping build this community.

Did you know that fewer than 15% of ovarian cancer patients are diagnosed at stage 1? I was diagnosed at stage 1c3, so I feel an immense responsibility to continue advocating for those who are going to be diagnosed, are living with the disease, and in honor and memory of the friends to which I've had to say goodbye that passed away from this horrible, insidious disease.
Today is #worldovariancancerday . Please learn the signs and symptoms of #ovariancancer & share them with anyone who has ovaries. Within the ovarian cancer world, my story is not at all common. I was diagnosed in early stages, and my doctors LISTENED to me and took my body awareness seriously. I have no doubts that I am alive today because of their prompt action. They heard me and took me seriously. So many other women that I've spoken with had wildly different experiences with their doctors, some having to wait over a year+ to be properly diagnosed. Some of those women are no longer here.
The photo below is one of my earlier chemo infusions, before all of my hair completely fell out (I was also receiving acupuncture during my infusions), and about a month after recovering from an 8 hour surgery that left me with over 12 inches of staples that held my stomach together. Prior to my diagnosis and surgery, I had lost an immense amount of weight because of the tumors - I felt full all of the time, and could barely eat. I was lethargic and exhausted, even after getting 10+ hours of sleep. Sometimes I felt nauseous. I had to pee way more than usual. Even though I had lost so much weight, my stomach made it look like I was in a first trimester of pregnancy- I had persistent bloat. These are all classic symptoms of ovarian cancer.
Ovarian cancer (and treatment) is hell, but it doesn't have to be a death sentence. Early detection is key. Unlike breast cancer, there is no comprehensive test for ovarian cancer. The pap will not detect ovarian cancer. Know your body, become your own health advocate and fire any doctor who makes you feel unheard. You deserve to live a long, beautiful, healthy life.
