Standout projects making waves around the web

I am fascinated by the all the wild in this world. By nature, which never ceases to be alternately beautiful, haunting and humbling. ???? Photos by the master @josiahwg while aboard @calicojackcharters

End of an era✨ It blows my mind that at 36, everything I own in the world fits in a 5ft storage unit. I don’t own a house. I don’t own a car. I don’t even have my name on a lease. It’s so…different from what I once imagined… and yet it feels exactly right? I don’t like having a ton of things. I love experiences. I love freedom (Sagittarius here????????‍♀️) I hope one day, not too far from now, I’ll settle onto an off-grid farm. I’ll have horses and a garden. I’ll make all my own imperfect ceramic plates, each with fingerprints pressed into the clay. I’ll keep a shelf of favorite books, ready to be given away. There’ll be an edible landscape so every walk is an invitation to forage. I’ll know the seasons of the land by heart and I’ll probably bake banana bread again. But today? Wow. Zero idea what’s next. All I know is: I feel happy. I feel grateful. I feel free. And what an absolute privilege it is, to design a life so undeniably me :)

The rains which normally come in October and November largely failed this year. Only this small area near the mountains is green and lush. So most of the Samburu pastoralists have brought their cattle, goats, camels, and sheep to this area to graze. Even when we don’t see them, we can hear them from the distant melodic chiming of bells and laughter. Interestingly, it’s not water they’re after. The Samburu are exceptional at a method they call singing wells where they dig for water underground. So they can always find water. What they’re after is green foliage for their livestock to live on, which only comes from the rain. So for this month at least wildlife and the Samburu with their herds are living in exceptionally close proximity. It’s the model that the Namunyak conservancy was born from - the somewhat unusual idea at least in the conservation world - that animals and the Samburu can coexist on the same land without fences caging either in. They share the land and the same hardship - climate change. Each year the rains grow less predictable, pushing everyone - herders, wildlife, conservationists - into tighter circles around the same resources. Yet in that shared hardship instead of turning against one another, they turn towards one another. Out here, community is everything. Sharing resources is everything. Protecting one another is everything. For a moment I am reminded that I too am part of this sacred everything. We are all connected. All thriving is mutual. ???? @sarara @sararafoundation —- Photos by @storiesmatter

Still pinching myself @Sarara.???? I found it hard to even come up with a format to encapsulate the multitude of experiences from day one from Sarara Main Camp. My highlights: We spent the morning at @Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, where we got to witness the inspiring conservation work being done for orphaned baby elephants. (More on this specifically in my next post.) Then I went on my first of 3 horseback riding adventures through the conservancy… after rainbows and rain storms suddenly we were walking alongside a tower of giraffes. I actually remember seeing a photo 8 or so years ago in a book of horseback rides in Africa. On the cover was an image of a rider with a herd of giraffe and that image has always stayed with me. Over the next few posts I’m exploring all four of Sarara’s luxury camps across northern Kenya’s Samburu area with @storiesmatter. If you’re also a traveler drawn to places that are beautiful, a bit off the typical path, places where conservation and indigenous-led stewardship are foundations of the experience - these posts might interest you :) To me what the @sararafoundation and local Samburu communities are building here is one possible blueprint for the future of responsible tourism, and I’m honored by their trust in us to share more.

The year is 2016. I’ve just been hired on my first international job - technically as a writer - but also because they were looking for someone who could freedive, surf, backpack for 5 days up a volcano, be in videos and write travel articles. I take a lot of photos of my feet and mostly of my adventures around my home. When I do leave Hawai'i it’s with my friend in his small van and I’m borrowing a camera because I don’t feel worthy enough to have my own. I start a series of captions called Notes to Self inspired by thoughts I usually only share in my journal. I feel alternately silly, infinite, uncertain, incredibly alive, mostly just honest. I’m a spa attendant whose main job is to fold towels a certain way and clean up after people. On the side of that I do graphic design. On the side side of that I restock shelves at a grocery store. On the waaayy side of that I do modeling and think “gosh maybe I’ll give this social media thing more of a try this year”. I tell my job I’ll be back in 5 weeks. I think I know what’s coming, but really I have absolutely no idea. And isn’t that beautiful.

From the first sunrise of 2026???????? I like to do these 3 exercises in my journal: 1. Write my annual letter from my future-self perspective as if it’s the end of the year and I’m doing a summary of all that I’ve felt, done, and learned. :) 2. Without looking through my camera roll or notes - reflect back on what moments/highlights stood out to me that brought a deep joy or satisfaction. This list helps me understand what I really value and remember long term. 3. List of guiding values (i.e. mine were purpose | play | peace | health/energy) then under each category I write specific habits I will embody or stop in this coming year to bring more of that energy into my world. Any practices or prompts that you’ve been loving lately? Wishing you a wonderful, energizing, prosperous and presence-filled upcoming year.❤️ Photos: @storiesmatter (who hiked this 3 days in a row for sunrise and photographed the cloud inversion layer two days prior!)
