Downtown San Antonio has always been known for its history, including the Alamo and the River Walk. But you have to remember the hidden gems that make San Antonio so unique. One example is the historic Downtown Barber Shop located inside the Sheraton Gunter Hotel at 205 E. Houston St. In the lower level of this modernized hotel you will find the historic value still keeps its beauty. The Gunter Hotel opened in 1909, and part of the plan was to have a legendary barbershop. Down the stairs from the lobby you would enter an 18-chair barbershop with 10 manicurists and five shoe shiners. As wonderful as it was, the barbershop downsized in the 1980s to four chairs and one shoe shiner. Today, the shop still holds its historic beauty even after recessions and a pandemic. With experienced barbers and a qualified shoe shiner, the Downtown Barber Shop offers the traditional gentleman service as well as the modern-day style. Appointments are preferred but walk-ins are always welcome. Free parking is also available. For more information, please give us a call at 210-226-1723, or stop on by. Hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday ????: @quit_club #sponsored

Rufus and Juanita Kiolbassa opened their family-owned business on the West Side of San Antonio in 1949. Just 10 years later, after Rufus’ untimely death, Robert “Bobby” Kiolbassa took the reins of the business and developed it into a community driven staple in the San Antonio area. In 1987, Michael Kiolbassa, Bobby’s son, became a salesman for the company and convinced H-E-B to carry their smoked sausage in a few select stores. Michael would deliver the product directly from his own truck to the stores where the brand quickly gained popularity. Distribution continued to grow in H-E-B, and eventually expanded into Costco stores around the country. Kiolbassa Provision Company has matured into one of the fastest growing sausage brands in the nation. Today, Kiolbassa Smoked Meats are sold nationwide in most large retail stores including Walmart, Target, and Kroger. The company eventually opened a second plant on the West Side of San Antonio, and in 2021, after the passing of Bobby Kiolbassa, Michael took the helm as CEO. Today, the company employs over 300 residents of San Antonio and surrounding areas with a handful of out of state sales team members. They continue to be locally well known for their community one-third donations, affectionately called “Bobby’s Legacy.” Kiolbassa Smoked Meats sausage line has grown throughout the years, and now includes breakfast links and Mexican-style chorizo. They remain committed to creating memorable eating experiences by using only the finest ingredients in their products. Kiolbassa maintains the same slow-crafted sausage that they have had from the beginning, using only honest meat - never any fillers, then they roll it into the smokehouse to smoke with real hickory or mesquite woods for several slow hours. The company stands behind their guarantee of being the best sausage you’ve ever eaten, or they’ll give you your money back. They are a great addition to any Super Bowl party, so pick up a pack, try them out, and let them know what you think. #sponsored

UTSA'S NEXT DOWNTOWN BUILDING APPROVED — With its School of Data Science completed and scheduled to open for the spring semester, the University of Texas at San Antonio received its final piece of funding on Thursday for its next building on Dolorosa street: the Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Careers (IEC) building. The $124 million structure building would reside west of the newly-opened segment of San Pedro Creek Culture Park, between Dolorosa and West Nueva streets, opposite UTSA’s just-completed data science building, which will also house its National Security Collaboration Center. The university expects to break ground in summer 2023, and for the building to be completed in summer 2025. It’s expected to open to students in spring 2026. UTSA has hired the architecture team of Overland Partners and Gensledesign the 180,000-square-foot building; renderings released this week are for illustrative purposes, and do not represent the actual design, the university said.
