Amelia Barratt’s Annotations project connects drawing with the voice, sound and the written word. It revolves around an elusive librarian, a rendition of a character frequently used in Barratt’s written work. She is anachronistic, fearful, droll and finely tuned to the minutiae of her everyday environment.

'Librarian' is an immersive sound installation featuring the voice of her frequent collaborator Mark Barratt, which situates the visitor in the librarian’s place of work. Each visitor is invited to view the installation alone on selected days during the residency period. In the darkened library, a monologue fills the room with a spoken autofiction. Books and the dehumidifier are the only companions to the busy worker, who wears a bell on her keys so that she can hear herself move. Barratt’s text offers a voice to the particular intimacy and quietness of a library, intensified by the present limitations on human closeness and public vocal expression.

Librarian is accompanied by a new body of works on paper, a selection of which will be on show in Outset Study. These ‘performance drawings’ hold a place for physical touch and emotional intensity, seeming to counter Barratt’s sober librarian. A fluid crouching figure in a hat is captured by a spotlight, while the inner life of our narrator finds expression in the feathery wings of a housefly. Working across performance, painting, printmaking and fictive writing, Barratt revisits her ongoing interests in the voice, archive, satire and still life.

Annotations II is a series of artist residencies and commissions for Drawing Room’s Outset Study. It follows on from the successful Annotations project and continues to provide artists with a period of supported residency, researching the library collection to create a work for Outset Study - using the wall, the space, or intervening within the library collection itself.

Annotations II is funded by Emma Goltz.

Another of our Curator's Picks from Gillian Fox, highlighting some of her favourite works from our current online exhibition 'Vanessa Baird: If ever there were an end to a story that had no beginning', which she curated alongside Drawing Room Co-Director, Mary Doyle:

'This drawing will surely resonate with a lot of women who are juggling work, family and caring responsibilities. Here we see Baird cast as a quasi-disney fairytale heroine, with the chaos and tumult of her quotidian domestic life fly about her. Like many women, she is at the centre of the storm, quiet, resolute, still standing.'

Follow the link in our Instagram bio to join artist Marc Bauer and Co-Director of Drawing Room Mary Doyle as they take us on a tour of Drawing Room’s virtual exhibition, 'Mal Ȇtre/Performance', hosted by @theVOVart .

Taking place this afternoon (Wednesday 28th April) at 1-2pm, this artist-led lunchtime tour explores the virtual revival of Marc Bauer’s exhibition 'Mal Ȇtre / Performance', originally shown at Drawing Room in 2019 before touring to De Le Warr Pavilion, Bexhill. Bauer’s chosen medium is drawing which he used in the exhibition to make small and large scale works on paper, a wall drawing and an animation. 'Mal Ȇtre / Performance' features the motif of people on boats throughout history, from ancient Greece to contemporary media footage with all of the works drawn in graphite. Images range from those inspired by fifteenth century Catholic ex-voto paintings, to Théodore Géricault’s 'The Raft of the Medusa', up to 'Aquarius', the boat that rescued migrants in the Mediterranean Sea in 2018. Using the slow and cumulative process of drawing and erasing, Bauer’s project brings the past into the present in his investigation of humanity.

You can register for this free online event by following the link in our Instagram bio.

theVOV is a new virtual ecosystem that presents landmark contemporary art exhibitions for you to enjoy live and on demand and Drawing Room is delighted to be part of the founding fifteen UK public arts organisations on this new journey into the ‘Phygital Era’, where the physical and digital coexist closer than ever.

The last day of our 10 week ROCK PAPER SCISSORS in-school project with @evans.rita and Charlotte Sharman year 3’s was bitter sweet as the children paraded, confidently through the playground with their instruments.

Each week the children worked collaboratively to draw from abstract sounds of amplified objects and recycled materials, drawing scores and sound shapes.

For the final session the children, inspired by their drawings throughout the project, worked in groups to create instruments out of materials such as foam board, string and more. The session ended with a performative orchestra where Rita amplified their instruments to be projected throughout the playground and into the streets of Elephant & Castle.

Much like the children listened and responded to the sounds, each week Rita listened and responded to the children, creating a project that was responsive and malleable to the needs and interests of the class.

'I like when we were working as team to make sound with different material and also enjoyed listening to and drawing other children sounds - Saad, Year 3 student at Charlotte Sharman.

It has been a joyful 10 weeks, online and in person with the children, creating together in times of crisis whilst encouraging confidence, collaboration, and creativity.

We hope to see the children again at our family studios in July and August, where Rita will be hosting a weekend!
