American glass eels spend a year carried by currents that bring them close the Caribbean Islands. As soon as they sense particles of fresh water, the swim relentlessly towards the mouth of rivers. During the day they hide under rocks and other structures that provide protection from predators. During the early evening, on moonless nights, they make a mad dash up river through a barrier of fishermen with nets. The few who make it, will hopefully spend between 5-18 years until they are ready to return to the Sargasso Sea to complete their life-cycle.
