You meet many versions of yourself on the road. Faced with the ceaseless divergence that not so surprisingly comprises the western half of this country, I came face to face with my own limitations and preconceived ideas about people and American culture. And sometimes, it really shattered me - the stunning diversity and subsequent whitewashing of North American Indigenous communities and cultures; the racism; the roadside kindness; the drug use; the living paycheck to paycheck; the nationalism, community and reciprocity all confusingly yet plainly coexisting. What I will say, in what is perhaps too few words, is perfectly encompassed by an ideology belonging to historian James Burke - simply put, “we know what we know.” . I ask you, what do you know? Liberal friends, moderate friends, conservative friends, what do you know? Friends who identify with the gender assigned to them at birth? Friends who don’t? Friends with years of formal education, what do you know? What do you do with what you know? Do you attempt to find ways of challenging and expanding what you know? Or do you seek out and valorize information that simply confirms what you already (think you) know? Do you attempt to bridge the gap between yourselves and those unlike you? Do you hold space for others? The ones with different histories from yours? The ones with entirely different belief systems and ways of making meaning from you? . I am grateful for the opportunities to ask such questions. I am grateful for the memories of all the places we blasted through in august of 2019. I am grateful for the earth, for the road, for all the people with whom I’ve crossed paths. I am grateful for my beloved, for our tiny feisty kitty and for the little road pup who stole our hearts just moments after this photo was taken, blessing us for the final two weeks all four of us trucked across the West.

I feel like having an Instagram “presence” is pretty ridiculous considering my beliefs change all the time and will continue to do so for like, ever? Like I literally posted about being an “ethical consumer” while denouncing capitalism and peacocking about getting arrested less than a year ago lmao consider this my PSA that I’m full of shit ?

What if every time you had the thought “what is wrong with you?” - towards your self or towards another being - instead you asked, “what do you need?”

Please join us October 3rd for @tastesofbrooklyn food & drink crawl in Prospect & Crown Heights! This event will benefit @seedsinthemiddle, an organization that helps empower youth in food deserts* across Brooklyn. Help support local businesses while facilitating access to fresh produce and helping build farmstands in local communities! A little bit about Seeds in the Middle- “Seeds in the Middle evolved from an 11-year friendship between an investigative journalist (Nancie Katz) and a Crown Heights principal (Solomon Long) who dedicated three decades of his life to nurturing, protecting and educating some of the city’s most disadvantaged children… Thus began a relationship that expanded when Ms. Katz approached Mr. Long to ask if she could help get programs for his school that other wealthier neighborhoods took for granted. Our challenge? How does a school create a sustainable nutritional life-changing program that can be embraced by a community with limited access to affordable fresh produce, quality supermarkets, healthy cooking, exercise, after-school programs or quality health care? Our answer: More teacher support in the classroom, cooking classes, a school-run market, professional development and physical fitness integrated into the school day and community.” - (seedsinthemiddle.org) From farmers markets and soccer programs to farmstands and cooking classes with local chefs, Seeds in the Middle works respectfully and joyfully with parents, educators, students and communities to enhance arts education, improve collective health, and help green the environment. I encourage all of you to take a look at the amazing, integrative work taking place at schools and communities partnered with Seeds in the Middle. And if you’re around on October 3rd, to please join Tastes of Brooklyn in supporting local businesses during the difficult times of COVID, and in raising funds for Seeds in the Middle’s upcoming projects! Please see websites for more info - tickets @ tastesofbrooklyn.com // seedsinthemiddle.org - If you / anybody you know wants to get more involved or have their restaurant join, please HMU - Big love to ma sœur @emilyrosev for bringing dis to mi!! ?
