Canada is an illegal occupation built on genocide

Canada is an illegal occupation built on genocide

Content warning: Mentions of residential schools, MMIW, police brutality

If you are celebrating Canada Day, you are celebrating the genocide of Indigenous people. You are celebrating the deaths of 4100 Indigenous children in residential schools... and counting. You are celebrating the murder of Black, Indigenous and other POC at the hands of the RCMP. You are celebrating the degradation of ecosystems and natural resources. You are celebrating the murder of thousands of Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ+ folks.

Stop using the excuse that “at least Canada is better than the United States”. Canada hides behind a mask of politeness and multi-culturalism, while turning a blind eye to the continued oppression of BIPOC.

Canada Day is cancelled. Not just this year, but indefinitely. We must demand justice and work towards building communities that take care of each other. Canada is nothing to celebrate, but I believe that together we can build something worth celebrating
