Did you know the University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819? To memorialize the school’s recent fundraising milestone, we set out to design an experience rooted in @UVA’s architectural legacy, and the founding father’s remarkably forward-thinking vision. Our process began with a walk through the Academical Village, studying the visual language he established more than two centuries ago: towering columns, refined bases and capitals, crown trimmings, archways, and intricate chippendale fencing. These classical elements became our inspiration, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Originally planned for a tented setting, the event took an unexpected turn and landed center court on the Virginia Cavaliers’ basketball court. What followed was a transformation of scale and space, where history met modernity in a way that felt both reverent and fresh. A night where every guest sat courtside. To bring @UVA’s fundraising celebration to life, we were handed a bold brief: create intimacy inside a basketball arena with 120-foot ceilings. A challenge we were ready to jump through hoops to bring to life. Rather than fight the vastness, we built within it. The space was grounded by architectural references pulled directly from campus and reimagined through graphic form. We commissioned an artist to create custom floating 2D prints, creating the illusion of sculptural table bases. Circular tables echoed the proportions of the surrounding columns, while manicured hedges subtly referenced the landscapes woven throughout UVA’s grounds. The result? A room within a room, proving that the right blueprint can make even the grandest spaces feel intentional and intimate. Designed within a tent, the goal was to create a space that felt residential and layered, with a nod to lovely English manor homes. The palette was thoughtfully rich, offering depth for late winter while gently nodding to the spring ahead through the use of chintz. We took a varied approach to the tabletop schemes. Cream @ginori1735 was layered atop chintz linens, allowing the pattern to lead, while @mottahedehchina’s Chelsea bird motifs were introduced on the solid tables to help pull the palette together. Working with Maxine, florals were kept loose, wild and variegated, using an intentional mix of late-winter blooms with deeper burgundy tones. Beyond the architectural detailing introduced throughout the tent, the major residential element was a series of six grand-scale paintings by Sarah Oliphant, created to capture scenes of the English countryside.
