It was the early 90’s and I’d just directed and was finishing the edit to a music video for Kool G Rap & Polo called, “Road To The Riches”, the 1st video & song detailing the rise & fall of a NYC crack dealer. George Jackson the film producer came to my edit and flipped when I showed him the video saying to me, “this is a great music video & it’s the same story of the film I’m going to make, New Jack City and you have to come onboard to help me get it right! As the films associate producer I played my position and left my fingerprints all over New Jack City. However, the architect of a feature film is the screenwriter and George Jackson said I’ve got a great script written by one of Harlems own, Barry Michael Cooper. I’d read Barry’s articles in the Village Voice & SPIN magazines and he stood out as the rare situation where his writers voice felt like someone who had flavor, skill and really understood what was going on in the streets. I loved the script and Barry and I became friends and we had many great conversations as we made that film. Barry was so on point about all this that in an earlier article on Teddy Riley developing a new kind of R&B it was Barry as he explains in the clip that gave Teddy the title, New Jack Swing to call this new exciting form of R&B he invented. It’s very sad news that Barry Michael Cooper passed away today but millions of people have heard his words spoken on that screen by all the strong actors who played their roles in New Jack City to the hilt.

Quincy Jones was a super hero. One of the greatest creatives America ever produced and a huge inspiration to me. Quincy loved hip hop and saw it clearly from the jump. He also saw what I was doing on YO! MTV Raps and was a fan. When we met in the early 90’s and I told him I grew up around jazz culture and jazz drummer Max Roach was my godfather he lit up and dropped a treasure chest of stories and lessons on me I cherish. When he started VIBE Magazine in the early 90’s soon after we met he reached out to get my feedback on the 1st issue which I loved. Soon after he asked me to moderate a secret Hip Hop symposium in NYC he put together as the east coast west coast beef was developing. He got a group of senior leading black powerbrokers like Clarence Avant and General Colin Powell to address a room packed with the leading players in Hip Hop music from east to west and everyone large and in charge was there. I get chills remembering how touched I was that Quincy Jones trusted and believed in me to handle that and saw clearly where hip hop culture was going, to the top! Quincy Jones was a blessing and a treasure beyond measure who will live in my heart forever. When I last saw him before the pandemic he gave me the epic book he’d just finished on his life’s work. You can see how he signed it to me, beyond special!

I’m really gonna miss you Patti, and you are forever a part of Hip Hop history and will never be forgotten. Patti Astor, downtown NY’s favorite underground film star believed in all we were doing long before this culture exploded. When @twincharlie Ahearn and I were putting hip hops 1st feature film Wild Style together you campaigned hard for the role of Virginia the reporter and won it. While we were making the movie the idea for the Fun Gallery in the East Village was born and you asked me to do a solo show there which was the 2nd exhibit and the rest of our crew also joined in including, Futura 2000, Keith Haring, Dondi, Zephyr, Kenny Scharf, Jean-Michele Basquiat, Keiley Jenkins, Arch Conally & Jane Dixon. We became the Fun Gallery crew & shook up the art world! Thanks for so many amazing memories, Patti Astor. Your star ⭐️ will shine bright until the end of time❤️‍????‼️
