Researchers at the University of Liverpool have just figured out a new way to predict volcanic eruptions. Using a jelly-filled tank and colored water to represent #magma (pictured here), they noticed a drop in pressure when magma spread horizontally along the bottom of the tank. That drop in pressure could drive the release of dissolved gases that cause the magma to erupt. “A pressure drop can drive the release of dissolved gases, potentially causing the magma to explode and erupt,” said team member Prof. Sandy Cruden. This sill, and its concurrent pressure drop, could be the most effective way to detect volcanic triggers yet. Cr: defwalls.com . We #MakePhysicsHappen. You can too. ???? Happy New Year to all of our subscribers! ???????? Let’s make 2016 a year to remember! ???? . This is our planet, as viewed from the #moon. Taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) as it orbited the moon, this image is a composite culled from the 7 cameras onboard the LRO. The #Earth appears to rise above the moon’s horizon, making it an “earthrise” - the lunar equivalent of a #sunrise. While the LRO views 12 earthrises per day, it rarely gets pictures like this. "The image of the Earth evokes the famous 'Blue Marble' image taken by Astronaut Harrison Schmitt during Apollo 17, 43 years ago, which also showed Africa prominently in the picture," said Noah Petro, Deputy Project Scientist for LRO. #MakePhysicsHappen Credit: NASA//Goddard/Arizona State University . #Physics phenomena for each day. These bright spots are inside the Occatur Crater on dwarf planet #Ceres. Taken by the Dawn spacecraft from 2,700 miles away, scientists have analyzed the footage and determined that the spots are ammonia-rich clay. “When we look at the models of the early solar system, we expect ammonia to condense much farther out—in the area of the gas giants,” says Carle Pieters, a geologist at Brown. “So the question is: How in the heck did Ceres get ammoniated material in the asteroid belt?” Scientists aren’t sure why Ceres has this material and none of the other asteroids in the belt between #Mars and #Jupiter. The probe is now 232 miles above the surface and descending, which will hopefully provide some answers. #MakePhysicsHappen Cr: NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA/MPS/DLR/IDA . #Physics phenomena for each day. ???? This is one of the few galactic collisions astronomers have ever seen. You’re looking at Arp 147 – the reddish-colored #galaxy on the left – after it collided with the formerly spiral O-shaped galaxy on the right. The collision produced an expansive wave of star production 15 million years ago, illustrated here by the bright blue stars. Arp 147 is located in the constellation Cetus 430-440 million light-years away from #Earth, and is 115,000 light-years across. Cr: Wikipedia . We #MakePhysicsHappen. You can too. ???? On the twelfth day of #physics a student mentioned to me, an Earth-like #planet 12 #lightyears away. ???? Scientists have found a star by the name of #TauCeti which appears to have 5 #planets orbiting it, along with a temperature and luminosity very similar to our own #Sun. This star is the closest single star beyond our #SolarSystem, just 12 light-years from #Earth. Tau Ceti is a bright G-type yellow main-sequence star, with the five planets lying closer to their star than #Mars does to ours. However, Tau Ceti only emits 45% as much light as our Sun does. Of the five planets, planet e is believed to be the life-bearing world. It is supposedly four times as large as Earth, and has just 168 days in its year. #MakePhysicsHappen . On the eleventh day of #physics a researcher gave to me, 11 #medical imaging techniques. ???? Medical imaging is the process of creating visual representations of the interior of the #humanbody for evaluation by medical professionals. Structures often hidden by skin and bones can be easily identified using these methods, allowing doctors to swiftly diagnose and treat patients. Some of these methods include: #radiography, #MRI, #nuclearmedicine, #ultrasound, elastography, tactile imaging, photoacoustic imaging, thermography, tomography, #echocardiography, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy. . This is Westerlund 2, a star cluster located in the stellar breeding ground of Gum 29 inside the Carina constellation. Westerlund 2 is between 1 and 2 million years old, but it has some of the hottest, brightest, and most massive stars ever discovered. There are 3,000 stars in this cluster hidden behind a veil of galactic dust, but they’re revealed in dense concentration in the center thanks to Hubble's near-infrared imaging camera. On the tenth day of #physics my faculty gave to me, Einstein’s 10 #fieldequations. ???? Einstein’s field equations are a set of #equations within the general #TheoryOfRelativity that describe how the curvature of #spacetime affects the fundamental interaction of gravitation. #Einstein first published his findings in 1915, which determined the spacetime #geometry resulting from the presence of mass-energy and linear momentum. These equations are really neat because they reduce to Newton’s law of gravitation when the gravitational field is weak and velocities are much smaller than the #speedoflight. These equations are also used to study gravitational waves, a phenomena physicists are hoping to detect within the next few years. #MakePhysicsHappen . This is the planet #Jupiter, viewed through an #infrared lens. Detailed images like this are usually taken by planetary probes or space-based telescopes, but this one was captured by an infrared camera and spectrograph mounted on the Subaru Telescope at the summit of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano. The pink-white spot is the Great Red Spot, an ongoing thunderstorm roughly twice the size of planet #Earth. The blurry image in the upper right is #Ganymede, and it appears blurry because it moved in the time required to take the picture. #MakePhysicsHappen Cr: prcnaoj_en . #Physics phenomena for each day. ????
