“Hope lies in the history of our fight”: 17 Social Media Stars Amplifying #AAPI Experiences.

Wow. Thank you @popsugar for including me in a list of phenomenal women.

I strongly believe that a lot of hate stems from ignorance & fear of the unknown. In addition to showing the racism & attacks, I think it’s so important to share our experiences. Our stories. Our families. Our cultures. Our traditions. And our every day lives because we are AMERICAN too.

I’ve always tried to be personal & open with you all for that reason. Never thought sharing texts with my mom almost a decade ago now in college (honestly to laugh off her harsh criticism ??) and opening up about my upbringing...my family overseas...would lead to this. We probably also never thought we’d experience a global pandemic! But here we are.

—————————

My words shared here: “Despite a painful year for so many, including the AAPI community, I do feel hopeful for the future. I feel hopeful when I see my Asian American and Pacific Islander brothers and sisters bravely speak out, some of them sharing their stories for the first time. I feel hopeful when I see AAPIs from East to South to Southeast Asia to the Pacific Islands supporting one another, amplifying each other's voices. I feel hopeful when I see people want to learn our history — what brought us here, our contributions to this country, and sadly, a history of racism and discrimination against us.

I feel hopeful when I see people want to be a part of that change. I feel hopeful when I see unity and people of all races show up for #StopAsianHate rallies and show up in other ways, from social media to putting in work behind the scenes. I feel hopeful when I see greater representation for us in all industries, from politics to media. I feel hopeful that, unlike many in my generation and before us, boys and girls will grow up proud to speak our languages, wear our cultural clothing, learn our history in class, and bring our dishes to school.

I feel hopeful that in a time of so much anti-Asian hate and violence, our community will finally be seen. Our community will finally be heard. And our community will finally be accepted as Americans.”

When Sammie & her family first told me she wanted to raise $10K to grant one more wish for another kid... I thought to myself, let’s go above and beyond for Sammie. Let’s do $100K.

I didn’t want to disappoint her though, so I didn’t tell her my thoughts... but wow ???. Here we are. Less than a week later. Almost at the goal I didn’t even want to get too excited about & say aloud.
