Standout projects making waves around the web

When I was a boy, I watched Tim Curry’s IT mini-series, and it might have been one of the most terrifying things I ever encountered as a child. I don’t know why, but some horror movies almost feel cerebral when you’re young, like certain scenes manage to infiltrate your mind and traumatise you, even if they’re not particularly frightening in isolation. For example, seeing Tim Curry’s IT suddenly appear behind a washing line. What is it about that imagery that conjures up fear within us? Anyway, I watched it again as an adult, hoping to rekindle that sense of terror I once felt, and you know what? Nothing. Every scene that used to terrify my innocent young mind fell flat. It hadn’t aged well, and nostalgia aside, I think the reboots were far superior films to the mini-series. So, with that, I’m genuinely excited to see IT: Welcome to Derry, which debuts this Halloween. Which IT interpretation did you prefer?

I’ll always stick up for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Because satisfying the brief of reigniting Star Wars after nearly a decade was an unimaginably difficult task for any director. Yet somehow, J.J. Abrams managed to strike that perfect balance, weaving nostalgia and new characters into a film that felt fresh enough, fun, and cinematic. Is it perfect? No. Does it echo some familiar beats? Absolutely. But when it came out, I don’t remember a single soul leaving the cinema disappointed. It’s only in the years since that people have started rewriting their feelings toward it. And honestly? It still has one of the greatest trailers ever produced, that music, that tone, that feeling. Goosebumps every time. Funny thing is, when Abrams rebooted Star Trek, the first trailer had that same magic (Go check it out! It’s wonderful!). And if reports are to be believed, Star Trek was exactly what caught Kathleen Kennedy’s attention and ultimately landed him The Force Awakens. What is your opinion on Star Wars: The Force Awakens?

I’d be fine with that. I know there was talk about Denzel Washington playing Magneto a while back, and now that it’s been confirmed he’s in Black Panther 3, there’s a chance that’s actually materialised, at least, I hope so. With Joe Russo’s latest Doomsday set photo, I think it was referencing Avengers vs. X-Men. My theory is that by the end of the movie, the X-Men will be removed into a new timeline somehow, and that’s where we’ll be introduced to the new young X-Men cast. For what it’s worth, my money’s on Cosmo Jarvis as the new Wolverine. We’ll see. Who would you like to see play the new Charles Xavier and Magneto, and the X-Men, for that matter?

I have a bad feeling about this… Just a few caveats before I share my thoughts… 1. I’m a big Star Wars fan. 2. Yes, yes, I know it’s just a teaser. 3. They still have time to clean things up in post-production. 4. Disney has access to demographics and analytics we’ll never see. With that out of the way… how underwhelming was that teaser trailer? When I heard The Mandalorian was getting the theatrical treatment, I thought: finally, good Star Wars content made for the big screen. Real locations, depth, and if we were lucky, some of that old seventies film-like grain. Oh, how wrong I was. This couldn’t look less theatrical if it tried. It just looks like a long Disney+ episode on the big screen. Now, going back to caveat number four, this could be because they want to transfer the large and younger audience from the show to the cinema seamlessly. But come on. Cinema visits are expensive, and people are lazy. Is this really going to get people off their arses and into the cinema? I strongly doubt it. I fear that if Disney do not course-correct the aesthetic, it will make as much as Solo. And that was one of my biggest gripes with Solo: it looked like a TV show projected on a cinema screen. It just didn’t feel theatrical enough. What did you think of the teaser trailer?

In an interview she confirmed, ‘My parents saw Batman Forever and thought Nicole Kidman as Chase Meridian was one of the most badass women … And then my middle name comes from Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear catchphrase.’ You know what? That’s exactly what happened with me. My parents named me Woody Joseph Stalin. But seriously, please tell me you’ve either watched or booked tickets for One Battle After Another? We need to get it to $500m. We need more original movies being box office smashes.

Well, that rules out Joker, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and Killer Croc. Matt Reeves went on to say that he wants to explore more of Bruce Wayne’s background, which is why I think it could be Hush. Who do you think it will be? And who would you like it to be?

James Gunn said to The Ringer-Verse: “I have guys I like. I have guys that are at the top of the list. One actor in particular… a pretty big star, wants to be Batman. We’ve talked about it, but I don’t think that’s the case.” If it’s not Jake Gyllenhaal, I’m desperate to know who it is. I’m racking my brain trying to figure it out. Who would you want to play Batman?
