In the quiet corners of Sardinia, a tale is being woven into existence, stroke by stroke. This is where ‘Voluntai’ begins. Author’s note: “Four years preceded this. I’ve never undertook such an endeavour. Creating a manga was my pre-adolescent dream. Who could have thought? In order to start this manga I’ve been stacking preparatory tests for a month, gaining just enough confidence to cling onto the thought “I am a mangaka”; though judging by the sweat, light palpitations and trembling I must have had a bad grip on it. This turned out to be a good thing as the act of holding onto the “mangaka” identity - as with any kind of identity for that matter - raised unrealistically high expectations on myself. Hence I drew and, most importantly, inked as whatever is that I really am when I’m not concerned with any identity: a sheer servant of the story. The photos you see are stills extracted from a video I shot by myself. I thought that I might make a video of the process of starting my manga, but setting lights and camera while drawing my very first board was too demanding. Not to mention the pressure a 6k camera can wield on you! As much as I was striving for perfect strokes, all those smears and unstable lines I now see as quite characteristic, representative of my journey and authentic.
