Goodbye, New York - (for now, I wasn’t going about to go all Didionesque on you, don’t worry.) People keep asking me if I’m leaving the city permanently, and I must say, that word, “permanence,” carries a new sort of weight these days. I used to put some serious gravitas on my best laid plans. For example, I did not think, one year ago today, that I’d be writing this, tears of almost a decade of experiences, loves (platonic and otherwise) and lessons learned streaming down my face. I didn’t think those tears would be so readily absorbed by my mask - the only face masks on my radar in 2019 were ones on sale at Sephora. No, I am not relocating because we are, “over New York,” or because I, “can’t go to the theater.” I still think it is the most magical place on earth, and to be completely honest, it hurts when people tell me I’m a quitter. Colin and I are moving for lots of reasons, the foremost being that, without quarantining properly, I probably wouldn’t get another chance at seeing my mother for years, precluding a vaccine. And, to be honest, I’m young, even if I act like the WASPiest UES WASP you know. As Billy Joel, a favorite New Yorker of mine, puts it, “Vienna waits for you.” That place, real or imagined—Rome, London, Shanghai, New York City—is, god-willing, going to be here a year from now. And, god-willing, so will we. If not, and you know something I don’t, definitely drop a comment. Throughout the many and varied conversations around who “stays” and who “goes,” I am seeing the word grit being thrown around like it’s gravy on Thanksgiving. I would like to personally invite you to consider some evolution around your definition of “grit.” To me, grit is closely tied to another word, “resilience,” and it is indicated by how I meet the daily challenge of accepting a new normal, and working as hard as I can to be able to see my mom, and reevaluating my ego and priorities. I love this city and I always will. And... family will always come first. To the people who say, “real New Yorkers will wait this out,” I’d like to posit a couple of questions: What is a real New Yorker? What does he sound like? How much money does she make? (Cont. in comments)

This little light of my life turned 5 on 8/3, but I’ve been bad at instagram lately, and she can’t read (yet, however she may be keeping some secrets.) Buttercup changed my life from the moment I saw her. She is the best big sister to Hudson, the best doggy daughter to @colin_the_barologist and I, and I simply couldn’t imagine life without her - we’ve definitely both passed out cold on a bag of cheese puffs. She’ll make me delete this later. I LOVE YOU MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF BUTTER GIRL ????

PSA: wearing a mask and having fun are not mutually exclusive. If you don’t wear a mask, you are committing an act of violence. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. ✌️

One of my favorite people in one of my favorite places - how lucky I am to have met you, Makena. Thank you for growing with me, accepting me (quirks and all), and for inspiring me every day with your strength, resilience, and kindness. Above all, thank you for being my friend through everything. I am fortunate beyond measure to be able to learn AND laugh with you. ♥️ You deserve all the best the world has to offer, and I’m honored to know you. I promise to hone my FaceTime skills and continue to teach you about makeup, so long as you help me grasp basic fractions. I love you, always. ♥️

Hey hi hello ? here with a PSA, because why else do I go on here anymore? This is a tricky subject, and if you are triggered with issues around weight, there is no need to keep reading. ♥️ That being said, I think this is a topic addressed far too rarely, and I hope people reading this can identify with what I’m about to say. I’ve lost weight this year, both due to health problems and circumstantial situations. This is by NO MEANS a good thing. However, I’m getting healthier by the day, and this post is not about me or my particular circumstances - I’m simply choosing to own them. Instead, I feel compelled to address the cultural conundrum the West seems to carry around weight. Losing weight is not always a positive, though it is nearly always addressed as such until a person becomes emaciated. Additionally, gaining weight is not always a negative. Health is personal, subjective, and completely unique to the individual. We are all built differently, we all eat differently, and we are (mostly) all trying our very best to navigate a culture obsessed with physicality and countenance. Think twice before you comment on anyone’s appearance; weight or otherwise. You truly never know what a person is going through, or what is healthy/natural for him or her. Bottom line: there’s a lot more to discuss than physical appearance, and those discussions are almost always a losing battle. I would know. I firmly believe that the utter preoccupation with body image in our culture - particularly the femme body, though the dialogue is not limited for just that - is a sedative used to detract from far more important issues at hand: race relations, public health, and the upcoming election, to name a few. Women were given the right to vote only 100 years ago today. BIPOC still cannot safely vote in many areas. We’ve got bigger fish to fry, folks. All my love, and always here to listen and support. ♥️♥️♥️

There are few things in life of which I am sure, but I am sure of this: human beings, no matter what implausibilities we may endure, have the capacity to rise. Again. And again. And again. Sending love, resilience, and New York tenacity to this whole planet today. #neverforget #911
