Nearly three weeks ago the World Health Organization officially declared Covid-19 a pandemic. The virus has infected over 165,000 people in the United States alone, rattling financial markets, upending local economies and resulting in over 3,100 deaths, with numbers expected to climb.
With the current pandemic that is impacting everyone’s lives in such a detrimental way, it’s hard not to get consumed with the uncertainty and trepidation that is hanging over our heads like a heavy fog. No matter who you are, feeling stressed and afraid is a normal response to an illness about which there is still so much to learn and a health crisis for which the country seems unprepared. But even if you don't succumb to the coronavirus, the chronic stress that may result from constant fear and anxiety about the illness, and the social isolation caused by social distancing and quarantine, can be a lot to handle.
While we busy ourselves with relentless handwashing, stockpiling and social distancing, we forget that there is room for optimism and so much potential to use the time to slow down, connect inwards, reflect and create. It is also important to actively find solace in the things that will help us cope during this time. Activities that provide us with an escape for a few hours and take our minds off the unease we have regarding our loved ones that are vulnerable to the disease, the safety of our family in healthcare that is working at the forefront of this plight, or the livelihoods of so many that will be affected in the aftermath. Let’s pray for things to get better but also take care of ourselves and our mental health.
So for everyone out there, stay home, stay safe stay healthy. We will get through this together!
