Today we said goodbye to Benham, the sweetest gentle giant, the biggest floof and the most loving & loyal companion you could ask for. Benham was my Mom’s dog, my fur brother, and Jasper’s best bud. Benham was the greatest protector, he could scare off anyone with his big bark, but loved his people with his whole heart and would do anything to keep you safe, once you were in, you were his best friend. A glimpse into his life at home showed you just how silly, goofy and sweet he was. He gave the best cuddles, inserted himself into every hug and gave the cutest little woofs when he wanted a treat (he was always so good at asking for what he wanted). My Mom and Darren gave Benham the best life, he got to enjoy the outdoors with them, lived in a house where he had 4 cozy beds to choose from, and had a backyard made for bird watching, which he loved. It feels like a cruel joke that 3 days after celebrating Jasper’s back legs taking him on a hike, Benham’s stopped working. A pinched spinal cord from a mass that had been developing over quite some time, by the time it was found he was essentially paralyzing him from the waist down. Jasper and I love Benham so much and we are going to miss him every day. To grieve means you loved deeply, to love deeply is such a blessing. His spirit and our memories of him will live on forever ????

After taking a hiatus from hiking for the entire pleasant hiking season, Jasper’s like, ‘wtf is this???’ From that time we almost made it to No Name Lake but turned around because of the wind, not his legs ????

There were more days than I’d like to admit this spring when I cried, thinking Jasper and I might never hike some of our favorite trails again (No Name Lake at the top of that list). And that would have been okay, I’m endlessly grateful for every adventure we’ve already had, long or short. But I wasn’t ready for the shift that would come with not hiking together anymore (are you ever ready?). I know he’s not getting any younger, but being back out there together this morning felt like such a gift. Every bit of hydrotherapy, laser therapy, acupuncture, and every supplement is paying off big time! So grateful for every single adventure with my best friend, this morning included. It was pure magic. ✨

I’m just over here getting shaky dad-cam videos of my dog on a trail, because back in May, I didn’t know if he’d ever be able to hike like this again. If you’ve been following along, you know Jasper has a torn cruciate (knee ligament) in his back leg and possibly a pinched nerve in his spine that’s been causing lameness. All summer we’ve been doing laser therapy, acupuncture, and hydrotherapy, and THE RESULTS ARE AMAZING!! We hadn’t planned to hike in and out last night, but a wildfire ~5 miles away spooked us. So, we hiked out in the dark. Jasper walked 6 miles total, with 4 of those on trail, and he crushed it! He hasn’t gone that far in a single day since March. My happiness is directly tied to his, and I can’t explain how much this little wilderness trip meant for us. Love you, Jazz. I cherish every. single. adventure.????????????

The last photo is what his ears looked like in his pet finder profile photo and what drew me to him in the first place, those wonky airplane ears with a massive smile ???? I have always cherished every smile of his, and as he gets older I notice myself in the moment thinking just how much I cherish being able to capture it. My favorite view is seeing him happy ????

10 years of loving you ???????? Jasper, I would choose you as my soulmate in every lifetime. When you came into my life 10 years ago, I never could have imagined all the ways you’d make everything infinitely better. I’m the luckiest person in the world to know your love and to live life by your side.
