Been seeing a few pictures of the Catatumbo Lightning recently and after 7 whole years of absence on my part, I really REALLY miss this magical place, that has created some of my favorite memories, especially together with my friend @alanhighton - who also hasn‘t been out there for the past seven years by now.. This shot in particular will always remain one of my favorite photos ever, especially considering that I got it in my very first night out there, ten (!) years ago, fulfilling a long-time photographic dream of mine to catch one of the bolts from the blue that just seem so incredible elusive most of the time. Back then, Alan told me that the spirit that lies within this magical place rewards those that truly embrace it with passion and considering that one of the first photos I took of a storm out there ended up being my dream photo, I can wholeheartedly confirm that there has to be something magical that lies within the confines of Lake Maracaibo and in this beautiful yet politically mistreated country that has given me so much in so little time spent there. Venezuela will always have a special place in my heart and to this day I‘m infinitely looking forward to stepping into the realms of magic again along these tropical shores for another incredible experience some time in the future. Until then, I‘ll keep staring at satellite pictures and lightning maps sporadically, imagining the beautiful and chaotic scenes that must be unfolding at this special place almost every single night. Recently in the wake of Hurricane Melissa and its Southernmost outflow channels, I‘ve seen some incredible-looking storms blowing up there which really sent me back to nights like this, that I‘ll never forget in a million years ❤️???????? #catatumbo #lightning #sunset #venezuela #zulia #maracaibo #lake #relampago #atardecer #earthpix #stormchaser

Mesmerizing Mammatus Clouds fill the entire sky above this old and dead tree that stands like a silent giant overlooking the plains around it, a magical scene at the end of a weird day where storms never fully realized the potential they had. When the storms don‘t look good in front, sometimes heading to the backside is the best call you can make for something truly spectacular. Of course this doesn‘t work often, but I wouldn’t have traded this for anything else that day ❤️ #mammatus #sunset #storm #stormchaser #backside #nikon #tree

A menacing supercell dominates the atmosphere, consolidating into a UFO-shaped beast while rapidly eating into energy-rich air, overspread by cold winds originating over the Rockies to the West. In a perfectly dynamic environment, it was only a matter of time until this storm would become a true force to be reckoned with and we were positioned in a great spot to witness this development with near hurricane-force winds blasting into the storm, wich made it very hard to stand at this point in time. Of course every little open crack in the car resulted in a complete dusting of the interior, leaving the whole car red from both the outside and inside. This storm was just getting started and lasted for many more hours, starting in the Texas Panhandle and slowly loosing strength as it began moving into the OKC metro area much further East, dropping a few tornados, some massive wedges, in its wake, flooding the landscape and producing both giant hail, and damaging straight line winds, that knocked over powerlines, trees and a few roofs off of houses. #supercell #storm #panorama #ufo #stormchaser #oklahoma #wind #severeweather

A stunning night-time supercell ramps up lightning activity while forming a massive layered inflow-structure along its base, as it creeps closer and closer towards us. This severe storm formed along the outflow boundary of a predecessing supercell, becoming a large hailer, as is quite frequent with storms surfing along the boundaries and staying more elevated in high energy-setups. At this point, it was warned for grapefruit sized hail and, supported by the strong inflow and high lightning rate, I truly think this would have destroyed our car for sure, so once it got too close, we drove just into town, out of the way of its core. This was our last storm in 2023 and what a banger to say goodbye! From there we drove straight towards Denver, where our flight would leave the next morning… #supercell #lightning #storm #shelfcloud #oklahoma #unwetter

An epic high-based supercell sweeps ferociously across the dusty Texan Panhandle, picking up loads of particles in its outflowy path, while towering massively into the energy-rich sky. That particular da had two different targets regions - one with lots of humidity and crazy dynamics and one with lots of energy, moderate dynamics and drier air aloft, so making a choice wasn‘t all to easy. We actually switched plans a few times as we were having a coffee in the morning but ultimately decided on the secondary target, that had more promising parameters for an actually photogenic storm outside of moisture-rich HP Supercell country - and boy am I glad we did, faced with this view a few hours later! #supercell #gustfront #storm #stormchaser #superzelle #sturm #unwetter #stormchaser #stormchasing

An angry High-Precipitation Supercell formed after dark and began unleashing severe weather across central Northern Oklahoma, blowing up slightly to the North of the path of chaos it‘s tornadic counterpart left in the landscape a few hours earlier. This day saw very energetic air that wasn‘t going anywhere, so severe storms kept forming all over the place, supported by strong wind shear, that helped them organize! A classic late-Spring day in the Tornado Alley! #supercell #lightning #oklahoma #tornadoalley #superzelle #unwetter #sturm

A chaotic sky is emerging as the outflow boundary of a former severe warned storm begins to rapidly push away, destabilizing large swaths of surrounding air and forcing it to rise violently, forced upwards by cold air that blankets above warm air. This formation here is called a „whale‘s mouth“, inspired by, well, a whale‘s mouth…. But it looks exactly how a crashing wave would look from under the water. While it‘s not neccessarily a good sign for a storm to have this feature accompanied it, it‘s still one of the most visually stunning cloud structure to sit back and enjoy rolling across the sky! #whalesmouth #wave #stormy #wind #stormchaser #txwx #duststorm #summer

An extraordinary Low Precipitation Supercells towers into the evening sky, twisting its updraft into an almost circular and quite skinny pillar, that stretched high into the atmosphere. The darker it got, the more visible lightning became, flickering all across the sky and sporadically shooting a big bolt out towards or even behind us. You never really felt too safe around this storm, but watching it was absolutely awesome. Those LP Storms surely are the photographer‘s best friend, but unfortunately they are exceptionally rare! #supercell #lpsupercell #lightning #colorado #nightphotography #sunset #storm #stormchaser #awesome
