This is my tribute to my DAD, the BEST FATHER IN THE WORLD. It took everything in me to get these words out-and I’m so grateful I did. In that moment, time paused. It felt like it was just me and him. One of the most peaceful moments I’ve ever experienced-honoring my father in front of the people he loved and the community that loved him back. A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who helped me near and far make this special day happen. My family and I have an endless amount of love and gratitude for each and every one of you. My dad would always tell me what an amazing group of friends and I have-and I know that is exactly what he is saying right now. There are a few of you that showed up in a way that made me feel safe the past few weeks, the way my dad always made me feel. So THANK YOU. Thank you to everyone who helped be piece this incredible day together, and all of you for joining me-honoring the legacy of my dad and celebrating him at his favorite place: Hanalei Bay. And thank you to each person taking the time to read this now. As many of you know, he had a few names: Steve, Duke-the salesman, Fur Cat-how most of you knew him. And of course, my favorite…Daddy. I could stand up here for days talking about how amazing my dad was. Traveling the world in pursuit of the best waves-and that he did. He left a mark on everyone he met along the way. As I travel the world, following in his footsteps, I often hear: Fur Cat is your dad?! And then the stories begin…From being one of the first to experiment with wetsuits and innovate an early version of the leash, he was always ahead of his time. Duke started the Slasher Sale-and yes, he could sell almost anything. He was a man of many gifts and a life full of highlights. He played piano in a way that paused time. He wrote poems that would melt your heart. His voice-almost as good as his brother’s. And good luck trying to beat him at chess. He was sharp, soulful, funny, loud, and full of surprises. You know what I love most about you, Dad? EVERYTHING!!! To be loved by you is one of life’s greatest gifts. Now you and Crystal are in heaven together, riding wave after wave-I know how much you’ve missed her. The two of you have shaped me into the person I am and am proud to be. WOW Yesterday was as SPECIAL as it gets-beyond words. Like you’d say, “Your actions speak so loud, I can’t hear a word you say.” You picked Kaua‘i, Hanalei Bay, for a reason—and yesterday, our community came together, and we all felt the depths of why. In loving memory of my dad, my best friend- Steve Wolshin, Fur Cat, Duke, and my favorite Daddy. 01.16.1952 - 04.03.2025 ???? My family and I are eternally grateful for all the love and support during this extremely difficult time. As we take time to grieve, I want to hold space to honor my dad’s legacy here on Kauai and beyond with this post. He asked me to tell everyone Aloha while we were in the hospital. He fought hard, but the real strength was in his surrender. So Aloha to everyone who made his life so full — we appreciate and love you all. Please continue to hold his spirit close to your hearts.
