While this season of lots of photo sessions and editing has been great, it’s starting to wind down for the year and I have been missing time in my studio the last couple of months. While I’m pregnant, I’m not able to work with my encaustic medium, but the ten month break gives me plenty of time to think about what I might want to work on next as soon as I get an hour or two to sneak back in the studio in the spring. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since finishing my European Summer series, I am ready to start a new one and have some ideas in my head. Fresh vision for 2021! ? “Wait...what the heck is photo encaustic?!? You put hot beeswax on your photos? Where did you come up with this?” That’s what people are always asking me! ? Encaustic is one of the oldest forms of painting (before oil paint!) that mixes melted beeswax and tree sap (damar resin) with pigment to paint. ? The Greeks used it to paint the funeral portraits that are still viewable today! I love taking this hot wax and applying it to my fine art photography to add texture, dimension and depth. I use brushes and pottery tools to do this! Then I apply oil paint over top to bring attention to details. It’s an amazing way to do something hands on and different with your photography!
